Waving voltage meter and lights
Hi everyone! I own a 1966 f-250, and have a common problem with old cars also. When I 1st start up the truck the volt meter sways fast back and forth, then when it warms up stays steady...but, as soon as I turn the lights on it returns to the swaying unless the engine is higher than 2000RPM, which gives a steady light and meter...Any Ideas? The voltage meter is new and the alternator seems fine and keeps everything in order and the battery charged. Help?

I would suggest getting the alternator tested anyway since this is usualy free at your local parts store. Also the article whiter whites and britter brites was suggested on another post. I did it last weekend and it is an easy upgrade.

Ok, I'll do that, since the alternator is probably original or very old! I have a feeling there is more to it...Maybe. Thanks!

The waving alt guage is usualy the voltage regulator. I changed over to an electronic voltage regulator and it works like a champ. I also installed relays with heavier wire to my H4 headlights and am very happy with the results.
