Rattling sound???

So I got this rattling sound like a piece of tin rattling underneath the truck, it is coming from the front of the transmission area. About 6 months ago the same thing was happening so I took the truck in for some other warranty work and had the dealership check out this rattle. When I picked the truck up I asked and they said it was rocks/gravel caught up underneath and they took them out and the rattle was gone. Well its back again and the warranty is up and me like a dumb *** never asked the dealership where the rocks/gravel was taken out. You guys here expierence anything similar and know where this would be happening? The truck is a 2010 FX4.

Yeah it has skid plates, you think it is gravel and crap getting stuck underneath there? It only rattles when I hit a certain RPM with the engine and it seems to be a very low RPM.

Could be a spot weld broken off a heat shield on the exhaust somewheres, i had a few on my f250 and escape rattle. If so, you can sometimes repair with a big hose clamp.

It is a possibility. It couldn't hurt to pull a plate and check.

Well I found it, it wasn't gravel it was a little piece of metal that had rusted and eventually broke that goes around the pipe from the catalytic converter on the drivers side, there is a sheet of metal that sits on top of the pipe that I think is a heat shield. Put a hose clamp on and good to go.

Thanks crazyrwe, it is amazing how such a little thin piece of metal can cause so much noise.

your welcome, I have seen them on my fords in the years, the sound will make ya crazy at times. It's a shame they can't make more of a solid weld on those heat shields, and they are needed, especially the ones under or near the floor boards.
