Navigator rattle underneath
I have a strange rattle under the vehicle. Only evident at certain rpms such as when I accelerate from rest. Sounds like metal against metal. If I go down a steep hill in first gear using the engine to brake the vehicle it is loud and continuous.
Anyone had this fault appear?

Could be the heat shield I will check underneath today, but it sounds a heavier sound than that. Sometimes when I turn the engine off after parking there is a distinct heavy rattle as the drive train shuts down. Othertimes it is almost always their in normal driving but at certain constant speed / rpm conditions. The best illustration is when I go down a steeep hill in first gear where the engine / transmission is holding the car back and the same noise then gets much louder and is a sort of heavy clunking. My gut tells me it is something in the transmission but I have no direct evidence.

Finally found the source of this rattle as it got a lot worse. It turns out that the exhaust system center box has a defective baffle so it is loose at rattling around like crazy. It is getting fixed under warranty this week and the service writer said it was a known problem on the 2003 Navigator
