What IS Flutter??
What is it? What causes it?
What does it sound like? Does it sound like detonation/pinging?
Is it rythmic? Or random in it's showing?
At what RPM range does it usually start?
Where'd the name "flutter" come from?
I was "looking' for the rev limiter tonight in second gear. I didn't find it. I wimped out at 80 some-odd MPH. They honestly looked like State Trooper headlights behind me Really! I'll try tomorrow.
But I heard loud random pinging? at around 4000+. I'm kinda hopin' that it's "The Flutter". I don't want it to get worse just yet as I just did my taxes!
10K down the pooper That's just FICA tax!!

My understanding is that it is a sound caused by the exhaust pulses traveling through the exhaust system.

Yes. A "rattle" if you will.

It's constant- like you'd expect the exhaust pulses to be.

It occurs in the range around 1800-2200 RPMs

No idea. Probably because it is kind of a fluttery (airy) ping.

Amazing how fast these trucks will go in 2nd gear isn't it!

Doubtful that it's the problematic "flutter". Could just be exhaust noise- if I remember correctly, you don't take the X up to those RPMs very often. The V10 is a pretty noisy engine when it's wound up.

I "THINK" mine does it between about 2500-3000 RPM. It has a "Pffffttttt" sound for those 500 RPM's. I'm not going to bother the dealer since I want to change the exhaust out anyway and being an '01 it's not "supposed" to have it. It was explained to me that it's the goofy Y pipe Ford uses. Sounds to me like yours was actually pinging!!!

Holy cow...I think I've got the flutter, and mine is an '02! Happens all the time from 1500 to 2200 RPMs. The sound is hard to describe, almost like it's rattling & hissing at the same time. It's grown louder with time, very noticeable inside and out of truck. Hmm...I think it's time to take a trip down to the dealer.

My 02 has a bit of a resonating "moan" at this exact rpm range.I notice it most when accelerating moderately. It isn't objectionable at all to me.It just lets me know the engine is starting to produce a good amount of torque.;-) Mine is equipped with the 6spd.manual so maybe it's more noticeable to me.

What IS Flutter??
I have a 2002 V10 Exc
Don't think I have any flutter but if I did I 'd wonder if it could caused by the right cylinder bank's exhaust being channeled down to less than a 2" pipe and then "Y PIPED" (IE slammed into) the 3 inch main at a 85 degree angle..! But I remind myself that this is the Fix, this is the improved y pipe. I like my Exc it has good power but I kind of wish I had never looked under it. That's OK there are headers and a new Y pipe in the near future.
