alrighty gents here goes. I am going to start a hot shot business. I already am going to do it so save the negative advice on that. I had the truck in my signature just sold it today and i bought a 1st gen Cummings ex cab 5 speed. super clean and runs perfect but i have a buyer and really need advice.
I have the opportunity to buy a 89 excab idi with the e4od. now for my business I will be towing around 10-15k lbs and i need to know will the e4od hold up. the truck will get a turbo and r&d goodies. not looking to have a monster but id like to tow well and in my mind the only weak point in these trucks are the trannys. so should i keep the dodge or will an e40d with a cooler hold that kind of load fairly well? thanks guys your advice is always very appreciated.
Get a BTS trans and an aftermarket TCM like a PCS.....run a bigger cooler like the tru-cool max cooler(you can find my install of that by searching my past threads) and be done with it.....will be the last trans you ever need in that truck and you won't have to worry a single bit about it.....i hear he has an amazing warranty/customer service program as well....
Well I have a friend that is a dealer for sun coast and ats so if I need tranny stuff I'd go that rout but I need this truck to last 6-8 months of towing that kind of wieght a couple time a month. I'd get a cooler from summit and hope for the best I guess. The truck is immaculate. I have never seen An idi in this kind of condition and it only has 131k on it so hopes its good to go. But honestly my heart says idi but my wallet says cummins. What to do what to?

I would toss either a Sonnax Sure Cure or a TransGo Tugger kit in that E4OD. A cooler alone is not enough.
well just sold the cummins and made a little money on it and now im in the market for an idi. like i said earlier R&D goodies and i just talked to my bud and we talked about building an e40d to handle the stress. should be interesting.......
Why not go with a stick? Near as I can tell, provided you keep oil in them, they're pretty much bulletproof(That being said, the syncro's do wear after a few hundred K, resulting in somewhat hard/gritty-feeling shifts, but they aren't that hard to replace).
I've been driving a stick vehicle for years now and am kinda sick of it. I'd like something easier to operate and not have to worry about. So I figure I could get a manual replace all the stuff that needs to be or do the same with an auto and with my hookup on that its about the same price so ill try the auto.
