Was this a catastrophic failure of the trans..........
Was it just a rebuild or upgraded too........
So the rad has been taken out of the loop......
What is the largest items you tow...... any idea on a CGVW truck and ??

Put up some truck and location info in a signature.......

Without the lower rad in the system you loose the heating/cooling effect of your fluid...... but if you operate in warm weather only that would be ok.

IE.... I live where it gets -40F so when I start the engine it heats up and then warms the trans fluid going through the base of the rad.......

If the cooler in the rad has been contaminated, get a can of cooler flush, flush it one way, then back flush it, and flush the lines also. Then in the return line put a magnetic filter to catch any fine particles that are left.

Install the remote filter in return line at rear of transmission.

You need to have the cooler in your rad also, the water is more effective at cooling then air, and in cold weather it warms the fluid, without that cooler I'm doubting you will have enough capacity. Just flush the cooler with cooler flush and the magnetic filter is a must, the warranty on my trans depended on it, the magnet will catch any metallic material stuck in the cooler and any material that is created with use.

Ditto on running both coolers. I don't have an E4OD but rather a C6 so I don't have the locking TC so my oil temps would be higher than an E4OD. fluid temp in the pan with both coolers (10kgvw cooler added on) now is about 190* when towing about 7k lbs in 90 degree weather.

Thats what I was thinking as soon as I saw the size of the cooler ,did'nt think about needing to warm fluid in winter. Will clean rad cooler and add remote filter to system with 3/8 lines should help with fluid flow problems I have read about. Also need to change rear main seal while trans is out. Will sure be glad when its back together.

after 3rd gear, the convertor locks up,which drastically lowers the temps compared to when open/the old C6.an external filter doesn't need to be large.it just needs to be efficient.
im not a fan of bypassing the stock rad,warmer/cooler.but instead i installed my external after it,along with an external filter.
you should consider installing a temp gauge, which you didn't mention.
now would also be a very good time to install a shift kit as well.

here's my (stock,of course.im still under 75k orig miles) E40D setup:
B&M SuperCooler Transmission Cooler #70268
B&M Universal Remote Transmission Filter Kit #80277
B&M Light Truck Shift Improver Kit #10025 - Installed STAGE 1. HEAVY DUTY
Cyberdyne Digital Transmission Temp Gauge -Red Heat/Black Bezel/Memory w/Sending unit #A221E061Y
i have my sending unit measuring the actual fluid temp just before it enters the radiator and external cooler, and at most i see is 200 degree's in traffic,or when plowing (i stop plowing when it hits 200,because i don't have an e-fan on it.)
here, the temps can go much higher than 200,unlike @ the pan.but i like my juice to last,so i don't need to flush it every 15k.
it's most common to read around 160-170 99% of the time.

Mine came taped to the trans when i went and picked it up from the rebuilder heres a link to the critter

Magnefine Filters--Online Order Form
I have the one listed for $16

Oh and heres a little fact if trans fluid temp gets over 220* its life is cut by 50%, and it's only listed as being good for 12k to start with.
