I just got 2008 4.6 F150 and I want something that's loud, but not obnoxiously loud, and will also get me a little better gas mileage. And I'm new to this stuff so please help. Thanks
Fuel economy wise, you are really not going to improve on stock with simple exhaust mods.
For a muffler that is better sounding than stock, without being too loud, and that makes a smooth clean, refined sound, consider WickedFlow. Sounds a lot like a Borla, but a little touch louder. Much cleaner sound than a Magnaflow, and its better built and longer lasting. Used to use Magnaflows, had problems with droning when cruising at highway speeds. Switched to WickedFlow and never looked back, all my cars have them.
I can't recommend any, but I will tell you about Roush. For $600, you get a muffler identical to your stock resonator, except it's 3" in/out, and a 3" tailpipe. The best thing I can say about that system is that that you get a nice tip setup. On mine, a 5.0, and this is simply my opinion, the drone at freeway speed is next to unbearable, your mileage will drop, and seems like you actually lose some power. Biggest waste of money I've ever spent on a system.
I tried a couple different mufflers and they helped, but I had a 3 chamber Flowmaster installed, and it still drones, but no where near as bad.
I've heard some have had good success by replacing the resonator with a delete pipe, and running the stock muffler. That might be what I end up doing in the end.
Noise is a subjective thing, so maybe you'd like the Roush, but it ain't for me!!
The problem with most performance mufflers is they are designed to be loud, so droning is a natural side effect and consequence. There are very few performance mufflers that are specifically designed to cancel out drone. WickedFlow Max, when properly sized to the vehicle, cancels out drone while still producing a mean muscular sound. I actually replaced the stock muffler on my '00 Focus because the factory muffler droned at highway cruising speeds. The WickedFlow Max 18SC224 that I replaced it with makes the car sound more like a rally car, and yet the engine is almost whisper quiet when cruising.
