So I've really decided that I want to keep my exhaust stock looking, but remove the stock muffler and put a better muffler there for a nicer tone/sound outside of the truck. Just a little nicer rumble, while running around town. Nothing to loud.
Has anyone simply removed the stock muffler and replaced it with like a flowmaster 40 or 50 series muffler and kept the original stock exhaust tubing? This seems like something doable, and much more affordable, plus I should get a nicer exhaust tone.
Don't know what vehicle you have. You can easily just replace the stock muffler with an aftermarket muffler. The aftermarket muffler will be shorter than the stock muffler so you will need a section of exhaust pipe to fill in the gap but thats no big deal. For the sound you want an Flowmaster 50SUV should work well. It has enough capacity and an antidrone chamber to help eliminate harsh noises and any drone. Magnaflow also makes a very nice muffler a 5x8x18 muffler should provide the tone your after. Bear is right, stepping up to a 3" system will help performance and sound.
We do carry two very nice high performance mufflers. Our Wickedflow is an awesome muffler, not too loud, has a smooth deep tone. Ours is somewhat smoother sounding than Magnaflow, also better built. Or if you prefer the sound of Flowmasters, we have a good imitation of it, the quality is equal to the original. The 50 series is what you probably want.
There are a lot of other good mufflers on the market.
The wicked flow sounds like a dynomax bullet muffler. Mostly a resonator. Do you carry mufflers that I should be able to mount right up to my 04' F150 4.6? I took a peak under there today and that stock muffler is HUGE! It has a hanger on the front of the muffler and looks like a clamp about a foot or so in front of that.
You are right, I would definitely need a little more tubing in order to make up for the size of the next muffler. Let me know what you might be able to set me up with.

I was referring to the Wickedflow Max series. It is not a resonator, and it does not sound like a bullet. These were the mufflers I was reffering to.
i'll throw a vote in for magnaflow, one of the best sounding mufflers i have heard and great if you dont want to loud and drone
The magnaflow sounds good on a 4.6L ? I've heard it on a 5.4, but never a 4.6. I bet there is a difference between the two.
I think I'm going to get the wicked flow as it looks to be what I'm looking for and the price is right. I just need to find out what size my exhaust tubing is and how I'm going to mount everything.
Its hard to make an american V8 sound bad. You could probably put a fart can on your 4.6l and it wouldn't saound half bad. Your tubing should be 2.5", however I would measure the OD with a caliper to make shure.
I went around on you tube and actually realized that the SUV performance muffler from Flowmaster sound really nice. It shouldn't be to loud either, but will have a nice tone outside the vehicle. I can get a catback and install it myself for around $300 it looks like.

I'll keep searching around.

The FM50SUV is a solid muffler with decent capacity and is about the middle of the road as far as sound goes. (Put one on my dads truck) I have a Flowmaster cat-back on my SD and paid $203shipped from Autoanything for it.(No Tip) The tubing on the catback has super smooth bends and fit good. The included clamps are a little crappy, I replaced them with better clamps.
