Was driving today and going up the on-ramp to the highway when I noticed the truck started running a bit rough, felt like it was missing on a cylinder and idling a bit rough. Let it idle and checked my numbers:
Nothing looked out of the ordinary so I pulled codes and found a code for Cylinder 8 - Power Contribution balance. Talked to a Ford master tech friend and he said most likely a dead injector. He said if I really wanted to know that I could unclip the injector while it's running and see if it changes at all. If not I've found my issue. Can anyone confirm any other possible testing before I buy a new injector for it?
FICM is perfectly fine, had Ed rebuild it about 3 months ago with the premium service and Atlas 40. Putting out 49 volts at idle after glow plugs have cycled through.
sorry to Last week I pulled DTC on my truck with AE and I have code P0278 #6 injector circuit contribution/balance fault. cleared it in hopes it was a fluke .
Hooked up again today and the code is back. No surprise actually.
The question is should I just replace it or follow the trouble shooting from the PC/ED manual I have ?

All comments welcome
You can change the oil and add some archoil to see if that helps but most likely you need a new injector. BTW--P0276 or P0277 would be circuit codes and/or shorted coils for #6 injector. Contribution balance code means that #6 cylinder is not performing as well as the rest and could actually be a cylinder. Did you run a cylinder balance test with AE to watch the power output?

I don't have AE. I understand one of the cylinders COULD have blown up or something but with the track record of these injectors it seems the culprit. I had to replace 2 of them recently as they were dead on a cold start but were working halfway decent when warmed up. Nothing looks out of the ordinary on any of the gauges and I have a feeling it would be running much ****tier if I lost something besides an injector.

Just a little back ground..... Have about 1k on oil Chang with T-6 .... About a year and a half ago had injector 2-4-6-8 replaced at local dealer.
Did the contribution test with AE but I can't really make heads or tails of it
But I can feel a hick up so to speak . Engine drives fine can't even really tell there is a problem other than the DTC

Try the archoil and see if it helps before you do the injector.
The contribution test on AE is hard to figure out. The baseline it gives you will stay on "0" if he injectors are "OK". When the moving graph line goes above the "0" it means you're getting an overfuel and/or that cylinder or injector is producing more power. Below the line and you're getting less. It's best done with a fully warmed up engine and sometimes you have to watch for a bit to see what the cylinders are doing. It won't be a strictly flat line all the time, but a bad injector will show up. AE will also do misfire counts for you.
