theres a 4 digit code on the block behind the oil filter that montana_highboy told me about.
Mine is 4D10 which i was told means 1964 april 10.
4D10 date code on an FE engine block could also refer to April 10, 1974
If it is a 1964 engine, it would have an oil fill tube, rounded valve covers without holes for smog valve/oil cap, and...
Since 1958/64 FE engines were only installed in cars, a different block bolt pattern for the rubber insulators than was used 1965/76.
On sale day, 352/360 engines magically become 390's!
Casting numbers are foundry marks only, cannot be cross referenced to Ford part numbers, are WORTHLESS for identifying one FE engine size from another.
Since all FE engines were cast as 352's, what engine size do you suppose the foundry mark casting number refers to?

The decade part of the date code can be determined by the casting number prefix (in most cases) There were no C4 blocks cast in 1974, so the date code would indicate a 1974 part. FE blocks were not all cast as 352's despite what is commonly found on the front of many FE blocks. Same thing applies to those blocks with "427" cast into them. Not all were 427's
