Still have one of those here in goleta. Plays 2 movies a night friday-sunday. They just broadcast the audio over FM so no need for the little speakers.

Back when we used those speakers, FM radios in cars was virtually un-heard of.

Other than to say those old speaker wires were a lot stronger than one might have thought, I have no comment

We should have a G2G roadtrip out to Hinkley. Before it is fenced off and out of bounds.

I could use a dose of Chromium

Are there plans to fence it off?

Not that I'm aware of, but it seems like the natural conclusion. They have failed at trying to stop the plume from spreading. Few people will want to stay. That last store in town is close to going under, and the evidence that the cleanup is failing will probably be the last straw for that. So I can see PG&E buying everything that's left and closing it.

Not that there is much to see there, other than a sad bit of history. But there is Barstow and all that the Mojave has to offer just to the east. We could do some offroading.

I think mid October to early November would be a great time for it. The weather is cooled off, and quail season is open

Ok folks, mark your calendars- first weekend in November.

Hinkley, California
Main article: Hinkley groundwater contamination
Hexavalent chromium was found in drinking water in the southern California town of Hinkley and was brought to popular attention by the involvement of Erin Brockovich. The 0.58 ppm Chromium VI in the groundwater in Hinkley exceeded the Maximum Contaminant Level (MCL) of 0.10 ppm for total Chromium currently set by the United States Environmental Protection Agency (EPA). The source of contamination was from the evaporating ponds of a PG&E (Pacific Gas and Electric) power generating plant, which were used to dry the precipitate from the cleaning solution for the cooling stacks. [18] It also exceeded the California MCL of 0.05 ppm (as of November 2008).[19] Note that since no MCL exists for Chromium VI the total Chromium standards apply.
A more recent study found that from 1996 to 2008, 196 cancers were identified among residents of the census tract that includes Hinkley — a slightly lower number than the 224 cancers that would have been expected given its demographic characteristics.[20][21][22]
Average Cr(VI) levels in Hinkley were recorded as 1.19 ppb with a peak of 3.09 ppb. The PG&E Topock Compressor Station averaged 7.8ppb and peaked at 31.8ppb.[23] Compare to the California proposed health goal of 0.06 ppb. The same day the study came out, the plume of contaminated water was reported to be spreading.[24] Ongoing cleanup documentation is maintained at California EPA's page.
