Has anyone had experience in converting a 56 Ford truck to have a dump provision? I realize the question is pretty general, but I know there are many conversions for all sizes of trucks and trailers, electric and hydrailics, to make equipment dump. I just dont know where to even start looking.
We don't know what section of the country you're in but around here used lift mechanisms are available. Seems like lots of folks with old, light, real trucks realize how handy a hydraulic dump can be. I recently removed a complete bed and hydraulic unit from a '49 F4 and sold it on CL within a week. The buyer indicated he would probably use an electro-hydraulic pump as he was installing the lift on a truck with no PTO provision.
Take measurements of what you have, what will work and be prepared to act when a suitable unit becomes available.
Theres that Missy Green, one of my most favorite trucks! Im from Whitefish, MT and currently restoring two F-100 1/2 tons and an F-250 stock grain bed to flatbed. Its the picutures of your truck that inspired me to add a bigger truck to my collection, along with all the interesting posts from other members who build these trucks bigger than the F-100s. So much of the old stuff for these trucks is being scrapped since the price of recylcled steel went up. I have no provision for PTO since the original truck is not a dump and its only a 3/4 ton. I will have to do some research on that "electro-hydrulic pump" option.
I think, but not sure, your transmission has a cover on the passenger's side that is removed and a PTO can be installed. I know all the bigger trucks I've had had the cover.
No kidding? I will have to check that out. I do believe there is a cover there but I have never removed it to see whats there. So if I remove it, what exactly am I looking for?

There will most likely be a cover there. So far as I know, all these four speed trannys had provision for PTO. Don't bother removing the cover unless you find a PTO output mechanism to replace it. They should be available. You will find a set of gears, nothing exciting. The PTO mechanism you're looking for has a sliding gear that meshes with a transmission gear, the controlling arm and an output shaft. If you find the PTO mechanism get the control levers or push pull cables that give control from the cab. Also try to get the pto driveshaft and U joints. As I mentioned earlier, a electro hydraulic pump may be an easier way to go. The pumps are commonly used today on snow plows, and lifts on light trucks.
Good advise! I will keep a look out for the PTO mechanism, probably not a lot of them floating around. Especially with all the linkage to the cab. I will also watch for an electro hydraulic pump and dump conversion that might be a good fit. Thanks!
I have had my eye out here locally for an electric/hydraulic unit for my COE as well.
Northern Tool and others sell them new, but they are spendy. I can still use a PTO if I have to since I have a manual trans.....just more of a PIA to set up.
Outlaw, I have a few PTO's laying around that might work if you don't find one. I live down toward Bigfork...
Kewl tinman, I will check my tranny for the cover on the P side. Do you have the linkage that goes from inside the cab to the PTO?
No, but generally all you need is a push/pull cable to operate. Pretty simple.
The hydraulics and hookup to the PTO are more involved though.......that's why the electric units are desirable. Much simpler to setup.
just caught this ,my 54 ' is getting a hydraulic dump box .from an old 53 I found in Saskatchewan,,,simple set-up with a sub frame and a one way pump ..power up .release pressure to come down .. it has a manufacturer decal on it ,,don't think they would still be in business now ..and two of my tranny's have the PTO on them ..cable operated ..in or out style ..would pictures help ??
I have all the parts from my F3's dump conversion. BIG Cessna hydraulic cylinders, pump, pulley setup (was powered by a mitsubishi starter motor) hydro valves and lines. I think it is what was left from a Converto bed PickUpac system utilizing a stock bed. its heavy but I will let it go cheap. send me a msg if interested. thanks .
A Note on pto's, you must know the transmission, number of bolt holes
in the cover = 4sp non sycro 4sp sycro. the five speeds are the same
meaning OD and direct. These are Clarks with two covers so the pto
can go on left as well as right. So what F series are we dealing with here.
I have installed so many I cant count them.
