hello guys I was just wondering what you all paint your frames with I have heard of por15 but then I hear about how it chips easy Should I just use a truck bed coating??
Your paint choice will depend on what your fame looks like. POR-15 isn't the best choice on a new frame, and bed coatings won't work well with surface rust.
I opened a thread with this same question a few months back and someone recomended Corroseal so I bought it and love it.It does'nt just cover the rust but changes it back to an Iron ore type metal.I put it on my frame with a sponge brush and it turns to a black primer and it comes out like it was dipped.I cant tell you how durable it is yet but from what others have said it seems good. What wizkid says is correct. Chassis Saver is great stuff from a great company. You can brush it on, btw.
I'm not familiar with Corroseal, but it looks like possibly a decent choice as well. In fact, it may be a good choice for hitting the frame as a base platform for Chassis Saver.
One coat rust preventative coating for vehicle chassis parts.
For protection of metal parts.
Can be used over weld areas.
Applicable over previously applied coatings.
Adheres/protects steels, including zinc coated steels.
This product is not rubberized undercoating, nor is it a stiff hard paint. It is more like the waxy coating the factory used to dip frames in, before switching to e-coating.
I don't know where the best place is to get the stuff, as it is not really marketed to consumers. I get mine through, ahem, GM, who recommended it in their service manuals for truck frame repairs.
Hard paints have problems with cracking on truck frames that have lots of flex.
I ended up using Rustoleum black "Hammered" finish. Provided a subtle texture to hide surface flaws, didn't require a primer coat, and could be applied directly over rust. Stuff turned out awesome with minimal prep and is holding up great so far, plus I can go to Wal-Mart at any time and buy it.
