I am doing a frame up restoration on my 77. I took the body off last nite. I was curious what I should use to paint the frame. This will mostly be an off road truck but I want to do it right. Any advice on the chassis saver. Also what is this por 15 I keep reading about. Thanks for any suggestions. Also this frame wont be sandblasted
POR-15 is "paint over rust". Knock off the dirt and loose stuff with a pressure washer. Very durable. I've been using rust converter (Ospho etc) after doing the same, then painting with chassis black with good results.
I like POR15 as well. It is very tough and fairly easy to use. It is also a PITA to clean up though. One thing to remember with it, if any of it is exposed to the sun, it will breakdown, so they recommend a top coat. That has to be applied while the POR15 is still tacky.

It doesn't have to be tacky to top coat. You just scuff up the surface if it's fully cured.
Well that sounds good. Just from the research I have done the.prep work is very important. Also I hear it doesn't adhere to clean metal. My frame isn't to the point where there is rust scale it is more like a heavy surface rust. I guess I will go with the por 15 sounds like good stuff. Any tips on prep work and application. How much do you think it would take to do the frame and axles

POR-15 will stick fine to clean metal. Just go over it with 320 grit sand paper and follow directions. Use the "Marine-clean" to clean the surface and use their "PREP & READY" first and the POR-15 will adhere fine to clean metal.
POR-15 works really good. So does chassis saver. I have also used just basic trailer/tractor gloss black paint from TSC and that works great too, very durable stuff.
I've used Chassis Saver and POR-15 has a good rep, but this time I'm going with the farm implement paint from TSC. Everyone I've talked to personally is completly satisfied and should be good for another 40 years. This project is a trail rig and even going with same stuff for the body. Only drawback is limited colors. Price runs $32 gallon for primer and $40 for the paint. Also will shoot fine with a cheap Lowes or Harbor Freight gun. And yes, I do have better guns and usually use higher priced paint.
I used chassis saver extensively with my bronco, couldn't be happier, its even still on a pair of jeans 2 years later (the jeans are about wore out, maybe they need more chassis saver?)
I used POR-15 on my 67 Frame. Brushed it on, then scuffed it, and painted 2K Chassis Black over it. Came out great! And, yes, you want to avoid getting on you. Takes a while to wear off!
I've used POR15 for years for frames, gas tanks, kids toys etc. I found that when the paint is still tacky you can spray just about anything on top of it. I did one grandkids wagon about 4 years ago and rattle canned red on it while the por was still tacky. Been outside since and still good. The tie-coat primer can be used if you are going to repaint with a different color. I think you can use their chassis paint right over the 15. Have not had much luck with the Chassis Saver (rusted under the paint) don't mix chas. sav. with lacquer thinner if going to spray - takes forever to dry.

Had to rethink my position on doing this chassis. The product sheet for Nason Chassis Saver say's ready to spray, with no mention of thinning. I'm going with what I know, rust encapsulator and Chassis black. Admittedly, POR15 is probably a better choice if money isn't a concern. After adding up the reducers, thinners, hardeners the farm implement paint wasn't near as good a bargain as I thought.
