This is going to sound like a generic answer but its all really up to you. I used the roll/spray on bed liner but I live in Illinois so the weather here is stupid and I actually want to drive my truck and not have it rot away...

I'm going with POR-15 top coated with their Hardnose black paint.

I'm going the cheap route with Rustoleum Rusty metal primer then Rustoleum Black. There are a few threads out there on this and the opinions are all over the board on it. There are many different products out there. You will be able to find people who think each product is the best thing since sliced bread and also people who think it is junk.

I figure my frame has lasted 60 years with only surface rust, to Rustoleum should hold it for another 20. Of course, I haven't finished painting it yet so I could be full of it.

If you have money, you can always get it powder coated. That will run $500-$700.

I had my frame sandblasted (cost of $200). Then I applied two coats of an epoxy primer using a cheap Harbor Freight HVLP spray gun. I followed this by John Deere paint (blitz black) that I bought at the local tractor supply house. Blitz black is a flat black and appeared to be similair in color to what I felt the original frame color was.

Frame off, blasted , primed and Chassis Black. Frame on, get it clean of dirt, grease and POR-15.

I agree with Tardster, it's all up to what you want.

Personally, I like the frame the color of the truck. It's not right or wrong, it's just what I like.

Mine is almost ready for primer, then it will be painted with regular car paint.

If you plan on a body off, strip to bare metal resto....then put a good epoxy primer and good auto type paint on it. Otherwise just clean it up and rattle can it. I painted mine in the engine area and left the rest.....nobody will ever see it anyway

7 Years ago we restored my son's 1983 Jeep CJ7. We use Rustoleum Primer and Paint on the frame. Cost was the driving force behind our choice. I'm surprised at how well it has held up. It isnt a daily driver but it doesnt sit for more then a couple days either. It has also spent many hours out in the mud. We have a farm close to where he attended college. The Jeep got USED.... But after 7 years there is only minimal signs of rust showing up no real signs of chipping or flaking.

On the other hand when I finally get around to MY truck, I will probably go with powder coating.

As most people are saying, "It really up to you"

I used a frame paint made by Nason, comes premixed to spray in either gloss or satin black, or I think they have it in rattle cans too.

Two coats of POR-15 Semi gloss base coat and one coat of their Chasis Coat Black.

If you can have the frame sandblasted (approx $200 as 51f1truck said) It will save you a lot of time and will give you the best look after its painted. Or if you dont care about the appearance you can simply wire brush all the loose rust and dirt off and paint right over the rust. POR-15 actually adheres best to a rough surface......It will not adhere to a sanded, and smooth surface.

The POR-15 base is UV sensitive so if it will see any sunlight it needs to be topcoated.

I did it with rollers and brushes in the garage. Took me 8 hours but I got it done and it looks good! Looks similar to a powdercoat finish. Might be a little more work in prep and painting but I think it is worth it.

I bought all of it off ebay because it was cheaper than buying it direct from POR-15.

Also, if you get any on your skin and it dries it will be there for a week even if you scrub it, so be carefull!!

I can send you a couple pics of my painted frame if you are interested. LMK

After a good cleaning, wire brush treatment, and wash-down, I brushed on a coat of POR-15 primer and followed that with a brushed on coat of their satin black chassis paint.

It's not show quality, but I'm probably the only one who will ever look at it up close (other than you guys in any pictures that I post!!).

Every time I spray anything in my barn I have to cover everything that I don't want the overspray to land on. The HVLP helps, but it still gets all over the other projects!!
