Ok so I have changed the oil before and I think that I only put 5 quarts in it but can't remember. The truck is a 1994 F250 with the 351W and the manual calls for 6 quarts. Well 5 +1 for the filter. I couldn't remember since the last time I changed it and put in what it called for. With 6 Quarts it seems like it is about 1 quart over full. Anyone else have this issue? Auto parts stores said that it takes 6 as well.
On my 88 F-250 351W I use 5 1/2 quarts with changing the filter. In fact most of my stuff uses 5 1/2 quarts. Now the funny part is my 4.6 in my Mustang takes 6 1/2 quarts.
Both of my 351Ws ('85 and '95) took 6 quarts. I don't recall exactly where that put the oil on the dip stick, but they certainly didn't look over full and 5 quarts was awfully close to the "add" line.
Does it look too high before you've started it? If that's the case, start it up and let it run for a little bit then shut it off. That'll fill up the new filter, and the dipstick will probably read a little better.
Let it run and build up oil pressure and then let it set for a good 2-3 minutes after shutting off and THEN check it. My 351 in my '84 always shows a quart over full after an oil change if I check it within 30 seconds of it shutting off. Gotta let it sit for a little bit longer
Watch out for these stupid 5+ oil jugs. They have something like 5.1 or 5.2 quarts in them.
I always figured they put in 5.1 quarts to allow for the speedy oil changers who don't wait for the bottle to drain. Ever let one of those things sit upside down for an hour after they were poured out? Quite a bit of oil comes out of there.
I always use a 5.1 qt jug plus one 1 qt bottle when doing a change on my 351. I've never had it more than the thickness of a fingernail over the line if I let both bottles drain fully.
Well looking at the oil pan today I noticed it does have a slight hump in the front of it. However unlike on my older truck it has only one drain plug. Maybe I should jack the front of the truck up alittle on the next change and see if more oil comes out? I dunno just thinking here lol.
