Ok, we all know these trucks, whether 4.9, 5.0, 5.8, or 7.5 liter, called for 6 quarts of oil.
I just can't get this off my mind. On my dipstick, 5 quarts (after a drain and filter change) puts mine to the top of the safe mark. There is a circle on the dip stick on up above and that's about where 6 quarts puts it to. But... I've read so much on everyone else having this problem.
I started just putting 6 quarts in it. BTW, I use a Motorcraft FL1A filter. How much oil do you add, and where does it go on your dipstick?
I had the same debate with my 351w. If I used 6 quarts, it would leak terribly out the rear main seal. I used 5 quarts with a filter change and everything was fine, never leaked a drop. The reason I had a debate with mine was the original dipstick was gone.
i looked mine up on autozone.com and it said my 302 only holds 5 quarts without the filter and by my guess i dont think the filter will hold much more than 1/4 of a quart here is the link AutoZone.com | Vehicle Selection - Year
Any other input? I know there's more of you that change your own oil out there.
And what do you think about that Franklin? Were you always retaining a full quart after the drain or what? I just want what's best for my truck.
I don't know, my pan came from the junkyard. The 302 I had in it at first also took 5 quarts. But I did notice the 302 that was in it was from a junkyard, and had "van" on it, so possibly a van pan takes 5 quarts? And the oil pan I got for the 351w was off a engine laying in a pile, so I don't know what it was out of either.
Yep, that Autozone thing says 5 quarts without a filter. Do you use the FL1A? I don't know, I think it holds a good deal more than 1/4 of a quart. Maybe a little over a half.

I put six quarts in mine. I also use a FL-1A filter.
It reads above the safe mark, before the engine is started, then after the engine runs, and the engine is warm it reads at the top of the safe mark with 6 quarts on mine.
I fill the FL-1A filter with about a half quart of oil, before I bolt it to the engine, to help keep the engine from "dry starting". I put the rest of that quart in the engine, with the 5 others.
I can top that...for 25 years I have NOT added oil to the filter with no problem whatsoever.....175,000 miles on the orig engine, never even had the valve cover off! But to each his own.
All I do is fill to the full mark and not worry any further. Of course I always check to make sure that I have the right dipstick and tube for my engine. That way, regaurdless of the actual capacity of the oil pan, the actual oil level in the engine is at the designed level.
Perhaps it is from 36 years in the marine field where full is full, and actual oil capacity can vary from 'spec" due to differences in engine angle as install in the boats.
Remember - Over filling is worse than being a quart low as it can cause aireation and foaming of the enigne oil leading to early flat tappet type camshaft failures as well as oil leaks from various seals that are designed to seal aganst a spray, but not with oil immersion.
