I have a 1997 f250XL heavy duty (8,600Lbs)4x4 with 460 auto.the trans took a dump an a few of the shops say its a 97 only trans is this true? Or could I use one from another year?
Well I did an got prices from 2900.00 plus 1000 core charge but they will have to tear it apart to see if it can be rebuilt, to 4000 cause its a one year only! That's why I'm trying to find out if its true. I did find one shop that only works on big rigs but since its over 8600 lbs he said 2000 which isn't bad an had a warranty 3 years 100,000 miles. Just got to get it towed bout 150 miles. Just tired getting jerked around even FORD wouldn't give me any info on the truck,an it was bought new in sept,97 so the motor/trans have never been out of truck an there telling me its a 5 speed manual! So been trying to find someone that's not going to tell you one starting to get to me.
They changed the solenoid connector for the '95 model year but all 460 95-97 E4ODs will interchange just fine.
The shop is technically right in that the '97 E4OD was a single year transmission. The 97 contained many upgrades over the 96 which had some upgrades over the 95 which was tremendously updated compared to the 94 and earlier E4ODs.
However, all the '97 specific parts can be installed into the earlier transmission. Many of the parts have completely superseded the older parts.
The obvious question is why do you think the transmission took a "dump"? The transmission is 100% electronic controlled, check for codes before tossing in the towel for a rebuild.
More than once someone on this forum has had their E4OD rebuilt to then find out they have the same problem. Of course if the transmission is puking out fluid or grinding you do have a serious problem.
keep calling around.you'll find a reputable trans shop.you want someone with good experience with the e40d to build it properly.when you find the right guy,he'll know what to do to any year e40d without making a fuss about it being a '97.
