E4od question (hate these transmissions)

I have a 97 f350 with a 460. I just bought it last week I noticed when I am on the gas hard that when the trans shifts into 3rd it bumps in. It feels like it kicks in comes out then kicks back in. This happens within a mila second. I am just worried because last year I bought A f250 with the 351 and I hade to replace the trans within 2000 miles of buying it and I really don't have the cash for a new trans this time around. Does anyone have any idea if this is a bad sign?

I have a 97 with a Powerstroke with an E4OD (150,000 mi), my trans was kinda hitting hard on shifts and slipping going into OD. I had the trans serviced and has worked pretty good since (164,000 mi now).

One thing my trans don't like is between 35-40 MPG on surface roads, it don't really know weather to go into OD or downshift.

Anyway back to your trans. Maybe a service is in order before you make any decissions on what to do about it, if anything at all.

Hope this helps

First thing you need to do is check for any DTC codes..... these transmissions are COMPLETELY computer controlled, and any little thing can and will make them act funny....

White 97 XLT....if the trans throws a code would you get a check engine light or will the OD on/off light start blinking?

Yes, check for codes. If they say 'misfire in #1 cylinder' your ECU could be going out. DAMHIK. Read my posts for a real horror story. If I had it to do over I would head for a reputable dealer. Hope you have a better experience.

There could be CM (continuous memory) codes stored and not have a check engine light..

Good to know.

When troubleshooting, I guess checking for codes whether light is on or not would be a good habit to get into.

It never dawned on me to check codes for a trans problem.

Learn something new every day.

Thanks

Yes always check for codes whether or not the check engine light is on... It's cheaper to let the truck tell you whats wrong , than to just throw parts at it and hope you hit the right one!!!!!

You're not looking for trans codes specifically, any code like maybe a TPS or even a temp sensor for instance can and will affect the way an E4OD operates.

It seems as though the e4od is notorious for odd shifting.
It is the result of sticking actuators and servos.
First thing. Check for codes.
Second. Make sure it's at correct fluid level. Idling while hot and I prefer neutral not park.
If those first two are good. Then
Third. Put a can of seafoam in trans fluid. It's ok if it's "overfull". Drive truck for a tank of gas. 100-160 miles. You can go more. It won't hurt it
Fourth. give a filter and fluid change and flush. Getting the actuators and servos unstuck takes time. The seafoam will help break down thick buildup. The new fluid will help as well.
After 5000 miles my transmission shifts mint.
Or
Give a filter and fluid flush and then drive a while. Then buy a predator valve body and flush fluid out again (what I will do next month). It seems to correct a lot of issues these transmissions have.

Sounds to me like your feeling the converter locking up. even under hard acceleration they unlock the TC inbetween gears.

Maybe I hope your rite. My other truck had 66,000 miles when the tranny went. My uncle had 2 1995 f150s and both those granny's went at 80,000 for one and about 85,000 for the other so I am so Nurvice when it comes to these things

Today I pulled the dip stick to smell the fluid and it does not smell burnt but I was not able to get it to running temp to check the level I did not drive the truck today I will try tomorrow
