97 F350 trans.

I have a 97 f350 powerstroke in need of a tranny. I have had it rebuilt 2 or 3 times i'm not really sure any more. the truck only has 67,000 on it so its very fustrating. Anyways i'm looking around for a trans and i found a truck that has a 351 in it and a newly rebuilt E4OD. My truck problems dont end with the trans, i am also looking for a 351 for another truck so i was wondering if this tranny will go into the powerstroke without a problem so i can kill 2 birds with 1 stone. Someone please help, i just want these truck problems to go away!!

Thanks in advance

Pat

I have the exact same truck. What kind of problems are you having? I bought my truck two years ago. It NEVER shifted right. I took it to three different shops one of them being a Ford dealer ALL of them told me it was shot, replace the tranny they said...
I started researching this trans (E4OD also ) and I found the problem to be in the valve body. I dropped the accumulator valve body two weeks ago. Replaced the line pressure modulator vale and all three shift valves all with Sonnax parts> It shifts beautiful now. And what could have cost me 3,000 dollars ended up costing less than 200. And what is best I did it myself and it was easy. I never send anything to the shop. The only repairs I have ever had done by someone else is a front end alignemnt . Also the trans you are talking about would not be what you want behind your diesel unless you made some changes.

When we first bought the truck it was great. then we started having problems, we kinda let it go to long then the trans was junk. got it rebuilt and it was fine, then had some more problems and brought it back, it had a warranty so they took it out and replaced it but never said what was wrong, i'm assuming their techs screwed it up. The OD light started flashing again and it read torque converter clutch issues. It went away then it acts up every now and then. Now some days its ok, then others it shifts real hard and doesnt go past third and goes about 30mph and is has nothing else. This trans probably doesnt have much more than 10k on it and its not used to is capability, hardly tows, and plows for the state pushing about 2in of snow at the most, then a parking lot. This truck should handle heavy loads everyday and plow snow like a champ and it doesnt.

Did they put in a new torque convertor? It sounds to me like you have some valves sticking. Mine were stuck hard it took me an hour to get two of them out of the accumulator. The flashing OD could be a code 62 pump problem. No, it is not toasted , more than likely...
Murfy go to the Sonnax Web Site and describe exactly what the problems were how it developed and so on.These guys are very helpful. If you can talk to Rick Willson, he helped me through my E4OD problem. They are not that hard to work on just very tempermental as are all electric shift trannies. I have done tranny work in the past when I was wrenching full time but this is the first time I been into a E4OD. I am gonna drop my acculmulator body one more time and add some shims to my 3-4 valve cause it still does not act like I want when pulling a load. You're right this truck should handle your jobs, no problem . I know how discouraging it is. believe me! Do't let someone talk you into a new trans until you talk to Rick or someone at Sonnax. Mine was acting just like you describe with intermittent

Here they are Sonnax - Contact Sonnax I could keep giving you advice but these guys are the experts.
Larry
