Blinking O/D light Aggghhhhhhhhhh!

Ok here goes. My o/d light is blinking and the shift is damnd hard from first to second. Little easier on 2nd into 3rd. No control on o/d switch. Starts blinking within 1 or two min of starting and not going anywhere(i let her warm up first).

Ok the details now. 97, turbo diesel, auto trans(e4od ?), manual transfer case. 56,430 ish miles original on truck and powertrain. I have a 96 engine and power train manual, and a 97 body chassis manual. The sensor on the top of rear diff is for the abs. Cleaned the contacts and put back together. Found the sensor on the transfer case for shift and cleaned it.
I cannot find the VSS on the transmission but book says model differences if it is there or not i guess. No blown fuses, spedo works, lights work.
Tried to read codes at auto zone and shows nothing, but from what I gather I need a ford specific scanner to read these codes.
I am now trying to clear codes by disconnecting batteries.
Any other thoughts?

Ok, thanks for nothing guys.... Just kidding. By following the previous threads and seeing what they had done, I have been able to fix the situation. Not sure what it was, but Ill keep you updated. By clearing the codes and other stuff, the light has stopped flashing, no hard shifting, and runs like a top. Musta been a fluke or something when I had the camper in it or who knows, maybe those pesky underpants knomes. Keep up the postings of how to fix these problems.... It really helps the pocket book, especially at 4.25$ a gallon.
Thank you!

Your first post was rather confusing. At least I was having a hard time making sense of it. If the OD light is flashing, then you have a trans code. If disconnecting batts fixed it, my guess is its only temporary. A good code reader is needed to read these trucks. Autozone can't do it. The VSS is located on top of the rear diff.

Now, this may be because I've been drinking, but it made perfect sense to me, lol.

Edit: And I've got to say - my O/D off light never flashes. Probably because it's sitting in a storage box somewhere.

Nope, the only electrical connector on the top of the rear diff is the ABS sensor, according to my service manual. It has one bolt with a sliding flange fork to hold it in place. I could be wrong, but that is what the book says. It doesnt look like the vss pictured in the book either. I could be wrong, thats been known to happen. And yes, the code reader at autozone wouldnt do it, but it works on my sprinters. Any advice on code readers? I was looking at one that used software and a laptop to read codes.

Weird. cuz mine and about a dozen others ive seen have a VSS on the top of the rear diff.
Maybe your truck PO did a VSS delete kit! LOL
JK...but in all seriousness it should be there. Otherwise what is communicating with the CPS and PCM to tell it when to shift?

If you have a PSD, the VSS is on the rear diff. Plain and simple. Look at scan gauge, auto enginuity, or a couple snap on coad readers. But, either you're looking at the wrong manual or you have the wrong truck. VSS is there.

Out trucks don't have '4 channel' ABS. So there is no wheel speed sensor on left rear and right rear tires. The sensor at the top of the diff looks at a 120 tooth tone wheel mounted to the differential housing. The signal which comes back from it is used for VSS, and (so far as I can ascertain) as a rear axle ABS input. I know it's used for VSS as I tapped the signal at the sensor and it is identical to the signal coming off the VSS pin of the PCM.

So far as your original O/D light flashing I suspect, as was posted earlier, a temp code was set for trans slip when you pulled the camper. Removing the batteries was enough to reset this code. I don't pull much of anything but I hate how much the torque converter slips in general in my truck, so I wired in a TC lockup override switch.

My truck is a 97 F250HD 4x4 with E4OD & 306k miles.
