o/d light flashing

ok I need some help. 2000 f-250 Super Duty Diesel 7.3 215 thousand miles rebuilt transmission one and a half years ago. od light started flashing on me the other day hard shift between 1st and 2nd.. read on this forum about the speed sensor so I switched it out had no problems for about a month. started having the flashing again and thought maybe I had dirty differential fluid in my back diff so I changed and since then the light wont go off. I did run some volt test and found that my volts were pretty low and found that I had a bad diode in my alternator. putting my life on the fact that that was the problem I replaced alternator with a new not rebuilt ( or cheap ) and for about 5 minutes nothing........charge and volts golden no flashing then drove and the damn light started flashing again. Still volts were perfect even with large load . what I'm wondering do I need to reset this before I can continue. I can't read codes because there's no service engine light. does anybody have any ideas ?? I would have bet one of my kids it was the alternator since I just had the transmission rebuilt a year and a half ago. this truck is babied and not beat . any suggestions would be fantastic.

A code reader that reads the 7.3 trucks will read the code. My Edge Insight does for the OD light flashing and it's an OBS. You'll prolly get "Trans slip fault", but it is readable.

You need to get the codes read with a manufacturer specific diagnostic tool. I use Auto Enginuity with the Ford bundle. Most programmers with code reading capabilities can also access these codes. Just because the SES light is not "on" does not mean codes aren't stored. Generic code readers generally only access the engine codes. Throwing parts at something can get costly. Read the codes before going forward.
Generally, the TSS and OSS sensors on the transmission itself are not replaced at time of rebuild. These sensors are used to determine TC lock up and gear range. A faulty reading from them can cause intermittent/erratic shifting behavior.

To reset this all you need to do is to find out what's wrong and fix it. The light resets EVERY time you turn the key off. Since it is flashing all the time it means the computer is seeing the problem every time.

You've already found out that replacing random parts is the expensive way to fix this, because it still isn't fixed.

That's absolutely false on two counts. One, codes stay in memory for about a month after the last time the problem was detected. Second, you DO have a light on, the flashing OD OFF light is the service transmission light. Codes are stored, you either need to get the codes or keep throwing parts at it until you get lucky.

okay I absolutely agree with you on the codes should still be readable. However I have tried both an obd1 and an obd2 scanner and cannot get either one to even power up. now I do have power at the fuse I have power at the diagnostic port but only 5.5 volts which seems right considering I be plugging in a battery operated machine. now the auto parts stores around here cannot come to a general conclusion on which machine I'm supposed to use obd1 or obd2??? Can anybody let me know....I'm pretty sure it's obd2. and why in the heck will these machines not power up if I have power at the port? its a 16 pin but only 7 wires are in to pin.

You have an obll system, the preferred or most common way to read the codes on our SD is this:AutoEnginuity Total Ford Enhanced Bundle - Riffraff Diesel Performance there are a few other readers but I do not know them off hand. Where are you located? Perhaps someone close could scan your truck.

Good luck
Robert

so why won't my obd2 even light up is that the wrong scanner? I'm beginning to think it is because I just hooked it up on my neighbors F 150 and it ran like a charm so is it obviously its a obd2 with an adapter

If you are using AE, your truck has an OBDII port but is NON-OBDII compliant. For more on that look at AE Class is in Session

There are multiple computers in your truck and each is capable of throwing it's own set of codes. With a basic code reader you might get a code for something like "Transmission Fault" or "IDM Fault." Where as with a good scan tool you can actually read in detail the codes thrown by the transmission or which ever system is detecting the fault. From there those in this forum with transmission experience can better assist you.

It is most likely not compatible. The f150 is compatible with off the shelf obdll scanners from parts stores. The diesel SD is not. Maybe I miss led you in my last post, the connector is of an obdll style. Can you post a photo or model number of the scanner you are trying to use.

Once you retrieve the codes, post them.

Good luck

Dude, get a ohm meter. Attach the black wire on the ohm meter to a good known ground..take the red wire on the ohm meter and touch each pin in the obd2 port. One should be a constant 12v. One should have 12v only when the key is turned .any code reader will read your truck. Some just pull codes, some are bi-directional.

I forget what pin should have the 12v. But one of em should. If it doesnt....break in the line or fuse. Someone should chime in on the 12v pin location
