Trans temps again

Did some around town driving on some hilly narrow roads yesterday. Fairly steep 30 - 40 MPH stuff and temps got to ~190 or so empty, 95* weather. Is this what should be expected?
Have not installed the 6.0 cooler yet but will soon. Just wondering if this should be considered "normal" under the circumstances.

190* is no problem at all. Mark has said that the optimal operating temp is 170*. I got up to 210* with my empty truck running up the freeway here by my house. I did put on the 6.0 cooler and now I normally run down around 150 or 160. It makes a big difference but for you, I wouldn't worry about 190* when running on stepper hills. If you are planning on towing, watch the temps and you may need to put in the 6.0 cooler.

Chip,do you use a thermostat with the 6.0 cooler? I am thinking about going to the 6.0 and some people here think the thermostat is necessary . Otherwise your tranny temps stay to cool.

That is the same question I have. I have looked at a tru cool unit that has a by pass and wondered if that was the best route to go. To by pass or not to by pass, that is the question...

I have read on this forum that the 6.0 is better than the tru cool. I am ready to upgrade just need to find the best deal on the cooler and if the thermostat is a must.

Not only are those temps normal, but at those ambients and those conditions I'd say you're on the low end of normal.

The 6.0L cooler is WAY better than a Tru-Cool.

Imagine what your temps would be if you were towing heavy with those conditions.

I installed my 6.0 cooler for those days when outside air temps are in the 90's and towing 11,000 lbs....

Your 190 degrees is in the safe range. But, if you tow, I would get that 6.0 cooler.

Do you have to run a thermostat with the 6.0 cooler and if yes where do you get them ?

You don't have to. I would venture to say millions of miles have been logged towing, by guys with a 6.0 tranny cooler in a 7.3 without a thermostat, with very few issues.

Thanks guys. This is what I was hoping to hear Mark, I am aware that 190* is plenty OK but it seemed that it did not cool back down very fast when we got back on flat ground. But like I mentioned it was pretty warm weather. It will be up in the 100"s pretty soon in NE Cal so my next set of days off will be the 6.cooler install.
