460 starter problems
I had a 351M with a C6 in it. Everything was a bolt up, no modifications.
I just finished everything today......I thought.
When I was turning over my engine it wouldn't start but anyways my starter would turn over like it suppose to. When I stop to give it a break and started to turn the ignition to start the engine...the starter turned and then just stopped. Waited, turned it over and it turned over like it suppose to. Engine didn't start. Tried to turn it over again and then like before the starter stopped suddenly again. Now it will constantly turn over then just stop quick..like within 3-5 seconds when turning over.
I thought it was the battery not giving the starter enough of juice. So I grabbed another battery and it did the same thing. Might turned over like it suppose to one time but rest of the time it would turn over for a second then stop quick.
Well I crawled under the Bronco to check everything....flexplate was fine but looked like a gray mark that went around most of the flat part on the teeth ring gear. I took of the starter but it was fine, the teeth weren't damaged on it. I used that starter on the same engine in my 79 f150 that I had this 460 in and it turned over fine.
So I took that starter off and got the one I had on my 351M..the teeth on that starter were...damaged some but would still turn my 351M. I put it on and it did the same thing like with the other starter...turn over for a second then just stop suddenly.
So I told my brother to get his jumper cables and get the truck and hook it up to the battery on my Bronco. First, it the starter stopped suddenly like before but I waited for a bit and it turned over fine then but engine didn't start. So I tried to turn over the engine again and the starter stopped quickly like before.
I just said the hell with it..maybe someone on here...smarter than me could help me out. I was in hopes of driving the ******* today after the swap took me about 3 weeks.
But like always...everything fails with me. I did notice the solenoid was pretty hot, while the other truck with hooked up to my battery and when we didn't use to truck.
Here are some pictures of the wire..the wire that runs to the starter is taped up as you see. It was like that when I got the Bronco. Could that be the problem?
I have also had better luck with making my own cables. I have gotten bad cables from the auto part stores on more than one occasion that have left me stranded in the woods!! All it takes is one time of spending the night in the woods with the mosquitoes and bugs and you'll appreciate doing it right yourself!!
EDIT...on reading your post, I don't think it is your starter if I'm reading it right. I've put stock starters back on my 460 swaps and no problems. The stock starters worked fine...even on my "big" big block. (514 with 12.5:1 comp)
