Previous owner had a BullyDog chip on it. I've been told the truck had lots of power and smoked a lot, and that the chip stopped working.
When I got it, it run without the chip. The Emission system light has been on since i bought it. The truck's acceleration is very sluggish, I mean, VERY, it progressively speeds up, if the road has a slope it wont go faster that 40MPH. I can't feel it accelerate. This engine should have enough power/torque.
I have 37in tires on it, but even before the truck behaved the same.
Any suggestions how to fix this? What should I look for? Exhaust? Sensors? Injector?
I will add a chip/programmer later, but want to fix this first.
Yep, good plan. Get that rig to 100% first before adding programming. It would be good if you could get the codes read so we can see what that Service Engine Soon light is telling you. This truck takes a special code reader, not the standard auto store type. Many of us use the Auto Enginuity software to do it, but there are others.
Yeesh... I don't know how many 7.3L techs they have in Lima, but the 7.3L can trick an inexperienced one into replacing parts without fixing the problem. Get the readings and see if you can consult before you gut the truck and your wallet.
I agree. Start with getting the emission system light issue corrected. It may be a multitude of small issues that are adding up to your power loss that you will need to track down and fix one by one. From your symptoms I would start with verifying your fuel pressure. Do a search and you will find tips on hooking up a pressure gauge at your fuel filter.
AutoEnginuity. Find the nearest rep to save on shipping/time. You'll have a very powerful troubleshooting tool with that (for a great price)... it's what many of us use. All you need is the base package with a Ford bundle added. All for less than $400 U.S.
