hey yall i was wondering if anyone out there with a diesel has a chip of some sort and could tell me a little more about them and weather you like it or notnad if it was worth the money haha. i have a 7.3L diesel and am seriously looking into getting a chip to get some more power out of her. thanks a ton everyone, any help would be great!
What year is your truck? and what transmission do you have? Its amazing how much these PSD's can wake up with a chip, and the driveability is improved 10fold in my opinion. Depending on what chip you get, a full set of guages will be required (EGT, Boost (not 100% required) and Trans temp for auto) along with an intake and exhaust if you get up into the 100+ power increases. More info on the truck will be useful for a chip recommendation.
ok thanks! its a 1999 with the square front u-bolts, and im not exactly sure what tranny is in it but i guess its one of the better ones they had. im looking at getting all of what u said over the summer after i get some money, but i would love to get more power out of this engine, cause i know it is asleep right now. thanks!
I think the best bet is to get a 3 or 4 position flip chip from TS or DI. You can have stock, 50, high idle, valet, 100, 140 and fuel 7 settings. A few others are available as well. With a flip chip you can have useable towing power, and a real hot setting for screwing around. Either way, you will not believe the difference between stock and 50hp. Both TS and DI (diesel innovations) have website, and I believe Jody Tipton (supposedly the best in the business) has a website as well. Something like DP-Tuner.com But anything is better than stock.
I have the diable delta flip chip from motor haven. I like it a lot, has "stock", 54, and 78 hp settings if I remember correctly. There is no comparison between the truck stock and now that I have the chip... like a different truck. I am also running a pyro, a very smart investment.. especially if you plan to tow w/ your chip.
My dad just bought the diable programmer from here also, he is very pleased with it.
I have the TS 6 position chip. You definitely need the gauges, intake and exhaust before thinking about a chip. The EGT's can climb VERY fast on the high settings. My chip really woke this beast up. You will not believe the difference it makes at first. With my chip on the extreme setting, I actually barked 2nd gear "ONCE"(305/70/16). I did not mean to because I have already replaced the transmission once.
A couple of adapters and a 5" piece of exhaust pipe with a 45 degree elbow is always cheap at the local Mack dealer too. That will drop the EGTs even more.
