Fuel filter cap

It depends on if you have the OEM cap or not. There is this tool:
Great deal on KD Tools 3526 at ToolTopia.com
Someone makes a billet aluminum cap removal tool but I don't remember who that was...
An oil filter and/or strap wrench works as well.
You may also have one of the aftermarket integrated filter with cap. Those kinds are hard to remove because sometimes you really have to crank them down to get them to seal. I prefer the OEM style cap and filter.
FORD OEM FUEL CANISTER LID with BEVELED O-RING 1999 - 2003
Racor PFF4596 Replacement Fuel Filter Element for 1999-2003 Ford 7.3L Diesel
With these parts, I usually just tighten and loosen by hand. No tools needed. It's not really recommended to crank then down too tight because the fuel bowl can split. All you have to do is get the o-ring to seal which doesn't really require that much holding power.
Good luck!

I use a big pair of filter pliers to get the factory Ford lid off, then I install the filter that Autozone sells I believe it is a 831, it has the Wix number on the box also, it comes with the new lid that has a recess in the lid for a 1/2" drive, I have had no problems with them ever leaking.
Funny thing is when I searched for just the fuel filter lid, it costs more then the whole filter assembly.
I kept my old ford lid, don't know why, I just did, that was almost 4 years ago and it is still sitting in the shelf.

Running with the Wix filter and cap and your asking for problems.
Most caps with the 1/2" slot tend to crack from that.
Your going to say that you have not had problems in the 4 years.
Just lucky is all I can say. Enough people have had problems wit the
aftermarket filtres and caps that it's a good way to have problems.
Is saving a few $$ worth a $12,000 engine?

I have got to quit posting when I am tired. For some reason I was
thinking I was still in the 6.0 Forum
I do feel any time the filter company has to make it fit because there
filter will not fit in the stock housing it not a good option. I am not a fan
of fit-em-all parts.
That being said I will still use a Fram filter on any gas engine so far.
