Fuel Filter Help????

Well i noticed that i was leaking diesel from the top of the cap of the fuel bowl. I figured that i would be time to change the filter. I took it off and went to the auto parts store. When they gave me the new filter it came with a cap. The one that came off of the truck was not attached to the filter. Should i just sawp them? The chick at the auto parts store told me that the other kind of filter is no longer made. Please help.

Yes, your fine. I just did mine a week ago and it's fine. She is wrong though, they do still make the OEM type. She just can't get them apparently. Whatever you do, SAVE THE ORIGINAL LID!!

i get my filters from car quest and they always give you a new cap i just keep the old one and put new orings and filter and new cap on done all is seprate when you pull it out of box. keep the old cap if seprate case you ever just buy the element. i think read somewhere on here that the filters with cap attached aren't that great for the engine

Several of the guys on here use the Carquest filter with the lid made onto it and don't have any problems. They come with a flat cut o-ring instead of the beveled o-ring that comes with the OEM type. You can't put it on wrong!

Yeah I switched to the cap attached and a friend recently gave me a factory filter. I saved the old cap in the box the filter came in so I had it.

i just changed my oil -oil filter and fuel filter.
i have had the best luck with baldwin products.
i buy my filters at a local parts house they service alot of the loggers and there 18 wheelers so they have a big selection filters.
i bought baldwin oil and fuel filters a few days ago i think i paid somewhere around $48.50 for both.
kinda pricey compared to someothers but i trust them.
long story short the baldwin fuel filters i buy have the lids made on.
iv never had any problems from them. i change my oil filters and oil every 5000 miles and fuel once a year.

fuel once a year.[/quote]Wow I don't trust the fuel around here to go that long unless you only drive 10000 miles a year. I change mine every 10 to 15 thousand miles. May be excessive but I feel better about it.

My rule of thumb was to change the fuel filter every other oil change. ( I use a Purilator filter with cap attached)
But now that I'm running Rotella Syn, I guess I need to change the filter more often being that I change the oil every 8k now.

sorry it was late here and i got tired of typing.lol
i drive a little car to work for the fuel millage it gets 36 miles to the gallon.
so i dont drive my truck much .
iv had it 2 years and only put 20K miles on it , so thats about 10K per fuel filter change

Riffraff sells the OEM Filter for $18. You can't go wrong if you kept the original lid. P/N is F81Z-9N184-AA

The key is to put the beveled o-ring on correctly. It is easy to confuse the wrong way with the right way if you put the o-ring on the cap versus sitting it on the fuel bowl flange.
