Just went out to change the fuel filter in my '01. I unscrewed the cap and the filter came out with the the cap. Try as I might, I couldn't get the filter (Baldwin PF7698) out of the cap. I stuck a punch in the old filter and gave it a whack with a hammer and it came apart (broke). It appears that the filter and the cap were made together as one unit. There is no way that the cap will work with the new filter that I got at NAPA. What do I need to do? The deal started off great too. When I tryed to get the appearance cover off I twisted both studs off, so I had to grind off the broken studs and MIG two 1/4" bolts in the bracket.

you should just buy a new FORD fuel filter cap and Motorcraft filter.
Some aftermarket units are one piece and are meant to be thrown away as one unit. the first filter I changed on my 2002 was a one piece and I just got a new filter and cap from Ford.
Worst part of the deal is that I'm 30 miles from town and 50 miles from the nearest Ford dealer. I'll check NAPA in the morning and see if they have the cap. If not maybe our local New Holland dealer, who carries Baldwin filters, has one like I took out.
