95 explorer 4.0 & 4r55e swap into a 98 ranger

I swapped a 95 4.0 and 4r55e into a 98 ranger 4.0 & 4r44e. I ended up pulling top off of the ranger to put on the explore motor so I could use my harness. I also used the old harness on the transmission. On the 4r55e there is no output speed sensor but on the 4r44e there was. I am getting a output speed control error from the local oriellys. Is there a way to put a sensor on this as it just has a solid boss now? It has a problem shifting down and it stays in to high a gear and around 1000-2000 rpm shutters like a manual starting out in wrong gear. any help would be awesome thanks

Your '98 4.0L should have also had a 4R55e. It was the only trans offered with the 4.0L. The 2.3L and the 3.0L got the 4R44e. The difference is torque rating.

This is part of why I never do and never recommend trans swaps, especially not from different years. Rebuilding is the only way to go unless something makes a rebuild impractical.

The way to do it is to take your old trans, rebuild it, and put it back on. You can use some part out of the other trans, a lot of the internal parts should be replaced with new/updated parts.

The engine came with the tranny mated to it, so I kept it mated it only had 97xxx miles and didnt realize until it was to late that it didnt have the sensor. I didnt realize mine had the 4r55e in it. I guess if there is not a fix I can drive it until I get the other rebuilt.

FWIW: Some '98 Rangers and Explorers w/4.0L got the 5R55E. Tranny code "D". That's what I have in my Ranger.

dang I have the d code too. I guess I really screwed the pooch! The motor and tranny came out of a 95 explorer , and look almost identical. My 98 had the extra sensor on the tail of the tranny though. I feel like a idiot, lol This is my first ford ,so i will use that excuse
