Not sure if early makes any difference, but late 99 and up will be around 15 pounds boost stock, and a hot tune from DP will put it up around 25-27. If everything is tight... but typical boost leaks like up pipe seals will hurt that. Looks like you have DP already, what boost are you seeing? If low a boost leak detector is the ticket. You can DIY one for pretty cheap or buy one.
60 horse DP tow burn puts my early bird at 27 psi. My diesel mechanic was quite suprised on the test drive. Put a smile on my face, sense the e99 seems to be the red headed step child.
I have been driving around in 60 E since I put the DP in. I had not tromp on it for max boost check but could tell their is alot more power there. Yesteday, I decdied to load up the Toy hauler to try out the 60 tow tune. The trailer running around 11k. There is a pretty sigificant grade within a few miles of my house. Before the DP I would have to drop the trans into second and run up the hill about 40 mph when towing the TH. I started the grade at 60 mph and stayed at 60 mph all the way to the top of the grade. My boost level was at 20 watching I could have gone more but I was keeping an eye on my EGT. DP is a great improvement.
Before I installed the DP , I had a problem with blowing the turbo intercooler boot. I have blown it off about 5 times. Just as I crested the grade....Bamm, off went the boot. I have orderd a new boot and will fix it right this time... Then I will take trailer out for another test...
I have read the boots from Clay at Riffraff are a very nice improvement.
'
...and then some. I replaced all my boots and the 4 T-clamps on the bottom of the spider (the stock clamps are whimpy). On one test run after repairs, I forgot to tighten the passenger-side boot clamp - the boost made it to 30 before she popped. Clay's stuff:
My boost sensor is on the hot side and it will always read a little higher than what the MAP says. I got up to 32 PSI on stock boots, so I wonder if you have bad clamps, not tight enough, mating surfaces still have oil on them, bad boots, or bad luck.
I was looking at the boots from Riffraff and from Mr Bob's boots. I like Bobs boots because I like the reinforcement ring. but Bobs are like super expensvie. For now I picked up the one boot from ford. 1C3Z-6C640-LA It replaces the boot from turbo to intercooler top right. The new boot is the new an improved (NOT) without the metal ring. The new boot has a ridge on the inside on one end. Could someone tell me if the ridge goes towards the turbo or the intercooler hose? I also picked up some new clamps at the marine store $8.95 ea compared to Fords $26 ea... and some brake clean..
Thanks for posting the pics of the boots, I can now see where the hump hose goes.
I tromped on 60HP Economy today and boost jumped to 22 lbs. I may have gone a bit more but I was already at warp 10!
I was able to figure out which way the inner gorve went when I removed the old boot. There is a grove in the intercooler tube that it sits in. I cleaned everything up put on new boot but decided to use the old clamps. Event though the clamps I picked up at the marine store looked similar the OEM Clamps were heavier duty. Even the old boot cleaned up with brakeclean. It will go in the tool box just in case.
Rich, those are Clays boots? Where is his name on them, is it on the bottom. The reason I ask is here in Calif., they are always looking for things, and names on things pull up red flags on smog checks. I like those boots. Mine are tight but they are starting to ware. It would be nice to get boots without the after market name on them.

I believe he has them positioned to where the Riffraff name is on the backside. Smog shops should not work that hard to find a name on the back side of the boots.

Yep. I don't do bumper stickers under the hood. If that damn turbo intake didn't have a biased bend, "Garrett" would be flipped and facing the firewall. Maybe an El Marko?
Even if they did quiz you on the garret pipe you could say something like it fits to the upgraded stock turbo that gives better fuel economy. Your not lying to them and they might think your a good bloke for trying to care for the environment by using less fuel or something.
I can say I'm glad we don't have checks like that over here, well we do but only if someone reports it to the EPA. Even then first is just a warning after that a checkup from a mechanic.
I've had a warning only cause we were being dicks and racing people in the city and clouding all the yuppies on the sidewalks with black plumes..lol
It sucks here, I know Chris had that problem with his, they told him he had Riffraiff diesel all over under his hood. There's always a way it just makes thing harder.
