From 1981 the VIN's were a 17 digit number, that can be decoded with the decoder on site; but earlier were 11 digit like yours.
Someone will be able to break it down, probably Chris (ctubutis) or Bill (NumberDummy).
Man, these books are marvelous compared to the 1993 variants I have for the Taurus! Sheesh....
My main point is, though, that 1982 was a transition year, and what engine was in what vehicles at what points during the year is gonna be pure speculation without having some sort of credible & verifiable information from a reputable source. This is one of the things I hate about forums... misinformation gets spread like it's the Gospel, and people swallow it and rarely report back when they've been duped....
I'll be happy to admit I'm wrong when I'm proven wrong. And, in my estimation, the parts catalog doesn't do it. But, I will admit that both my data sampling size is small and my memory poor, so when I say that I've never seen an M in an 82 you should know that there is cause for debate. Further, there are a great many people on here who have far better credentials than I, so no one should be going to the bank with what I say.
Anyway, have fun in CA with Bill. That will be a hoot and you will come back with so many stories you won't be able to remember them all.
The Jester™ is headed out to Caleeforneea day after tomorrow, gonna hang out with Bill The Mastah (ND) for 2 weeks. Gotta pack, try and finish my taxes, etc. tomorrow....
Is this going to be like training under Bruce Lee? You'll be like Chuck Norris then?
Wait till he rips out your chest hair and then tells you what the Ford part number for a replacement is!
Yes, welcome to FTE! And, don't mind Chris, he's just our resident jester.
Ahhhh, 1981 was the last of the mighty M in the F's and 1982 was the first of the Wheezers therein. E's had the Wheezer in 1981 though. (Just going from memory, but the two 81's in the driveway are M's, and the 82's I've had were both W's.)
Yes you are correct, I own one, it has the 400m and it's an 82 6.6l 4x4 with manual T18 3 speed plus a granny gear. Anyone know where I could find a good wiring diagram for this thing? I have a few extrah wires that have been cut off. Trying to find out what goes threw the fire wall and what comes off the solenoid. Someone has cut a few things.

I see you've got a battery charger connected. I love you, man! You wouldn't believe how many times guys skip that all important step when troubleshooting.
I also see you're in the process of replacing the starter relay. Modern aftermarket brands have caused LOTS of grief, so make sure to go top quality. Details here:
Just asking, does the battery ground cable connect to the frame and the engine block ?
Yes, my main concern is just trying to find the correct diagram for this setup, it's a rare truck and engine so I'm having a hard time. I got a fat yellow wire coming out driver side nothing hooked to it. I got a wire coming from the alternator connected to the fat terminal on the solenoid, not sure if that's supposed to be hooked to a small terminal like ones going to coil. Connectors not hooked up off the shift assist if that's even what it is. Black mechanism on the right side of engine bay. Just be nice to find a diagram or a manual for this specific truck rather than the Haynes I got that dose t show much or I'm not even sure at all because it literally says in the book they can't show all the diagrams.

Yea mine actually got stuck on so I wacked it with a wrench, then decided to replace it. Everything works that I know of, I'm just trying to find a diagram so I can fix anything that may have caused it, also to make sure everything is just simply hooked up right, it's pretty obvious hands have been under this hood before me and after it was sold. I got wires disconnected, spliced, all sorts of odd things just want to get it back to factory spec, then maybe start cleaning it up and throwing some performance in it. It's basically a Cleveland other than the pistons and crank so why not ay lol
I noticed another little detail in need of some love. Your truck is missing the handle for the jack. The handle is secured to the two (empty) clips on either side of the radiator. Pics of the handle and how it's stored can be seen in these threads:
The missing handle is something you may not notice until you really need it, and end up stranded somewhere.
I'd also give the jack itself a good look-see. It was stored in the extended position and looks to have a lot of rust on the exposed portion. I bet you'll need to give the jack a good cleaning and oiling.
The lug wrench is missing, too. See pics at the links above. It mounts in a bracket on the driver's side. Even though I have the stock lug wrench, I prefer a socket and long breaker bar. I stow them under the seat.
