[updated:LAST EDITED ON 01-15-03 AT 09:45 PM (EST)]Hello all, i have a 1978 Ford F-250 F-250 Ranger long bed single cab that is six inch lifted on some 36 inch goodyear hummer surplus tires . I put in a detroit locker in the rear. I was wondering what the engine could be because i know they offered 302, 351, 400M ,460 ETC around that time but i have always been told the truck has a 402:-staun :-staun A CHEVY ENGINE!!!!!!!!!! i know the truck had the engine replaced in late 80's and i never found out what the engine really was! Also, what would be the possibility of getting a good sounding exhaust system that sounds raw and loud on this "402" engine.. WHTA KIND OF ENGINE DO I HAVE ?!?! maybe a 351 bored out ?

no 460s offered in 4wd's. same for the 302. count the vavle cover bolts. if 7 its a swapped in 460. if 8 its a 351M or 400. check to see if it has a emission sticker. they have the engine size right on it.
If the distributor is in the front it is a ford, one of the higher notes in ford engineering because it makes it easy to set the timing, If she's a Chevy, then the dist will be in the rear. I think some flowmaster 40 series would sound great on the 402, I know they sound great on my brothers '95 Cheyenne w/ a 350. My 78 Ranger has factory, ima leave it quiet and beef it up so i can sneak up on people. Good Luck
The emmissions sticker will be on the drivers side valve cover unless someone has removed it or repainted. If theres nothing there, casting numbers would identify your engine also.
