The engine is the big, greasy thing under the hood.

Seriously... you're gonna have to provide some more information, or else ask if you don't know how to find out what you're looking for.... you could have the I-6, maybe a 302 (not sure they were offered in 250s but could have been), a 351 (my guess would be it'd be an M but could also be a W), might have a 400 or could even maybe be a 460.

1982 was the last year for the 351M & 400 and Ford transitioned to the 351W and 460 in 1982, so......

If you post a picture of the Certification Label on the driver's side door jamb, we can tell you a lot about how it came from the factory.

Welcome to FTE.

Yes, welcome to FTE! And, don't mind Chris, he's just our resident jester.

Ahhhh, 1981 was the last of the mighty M in the F's and 1982 was the first of the Wheezers therein. E's had the Wheezer in 1981 though. (Just going from memory, but the two 81's in the driveway are M's, and the 82's I've had were both W's.)

Check the thermostat housing: If it goes into the intake manifold it is a Windsor, either a 302 or a 351. But, like Chris I don't think Ford put the 302 in the 250.

You keep saying this, Gary... and I keep trying to correct you... but you never seem to remember... have you been keeping up with your medication?

I don't have any official Ford documentation that explains it clearly, just that Bubba's site that says the M-blocks were phased out in 1982.

Now... maybe during phasing they started with the Wheezers in the 150s, but there were certainly Ms in the 250s & 350s in 1982...

For official Ford documentation, refer to Ye Ol'e Parts Book.... and go nose around your local JY for several years and make note of what ya come across....

Yep! Looks like an engine, alright!

Kinda looks like a Windsor block but it's hard to tell.

What is your VIN?

Ford did put 302's in LIGHT Duty F250's, the ones with semi floating axles.

If his F250 is an HD model, it'll most likely have a 351 or bigger if it's a V8.

F250 did come with a 302, but the F350 did not. I don't think the F150 should've even had a 302. I think the 302 should've stayed in F100's with appropriate gearing. I still can't figure out why Ford never put the 302 in a Ranger 1/4 ton pickup from the factory.

To see what engine you have, you need to look in one of two places:

The radiator support sticker under the hood, which will have either a metric displacement listed, or an SAE displacement listed. Being that everything switched over to metric, in I think 1983 was the first year, yours should have a SAE listing.

OR:

The certification label on the driver's side door jamb. Post the VIN #. This is the best way, and you can also get your VIN code deciphered by the Jester.

You can have the 300/4.9L, 302/5.0L (which isn't a true 5.0, if I remember right it's 4996 CC, which makes it a 4.9. The 5.0 came with the metric conversion to differ between the 6 and 8 cyl), a 351/5.8L Windsor or Modified motor, a 400 (which I think is a 6.6L), or a 460/7.5L.

Who needs a junk yard? I just go outside! I'll look tomorrow and check the build date on Brownie, but he came w/a W and he is an 82 model. The 82 Explorer was built in May of 82 and it is a Windsor. But, both are 150's, so maybe the M's were used in the heavier trucks? In any event I've not seen an 82 with an M.

And you know as well as I do that you can prove anything with Ford's wonderous documentation. I've seen more blatant errors in the catalog than I would have thought possible. However, I'm probably wrong on this point - again. And I'll probably be wrong on it a few more times.

Man, these books are marvelous compared to the 1993 variants I have for the Taurus! Sheesh....

My main point is, though, that 1982 was a transition year, and what engine was in what vehicles at what points during the year is gonna be pure speculation without having some sort of credible & verifiable information from a reputable source. This is one of the things I hate about forums... misinformation gets spread like it's the Gospel, and people swallow it and rarely report back when they've been duped....
