Well this is my first ford I have ever owned I have been a chevy man my whole life but needed a diesel and couldn't bring my self to buy a duramax from japan , but anyway when i crank my truck up first thing in the morning my engine temp should move up to warm or normal , then once i start driving it will jump up real fast to normal then go right back down to below cold , but what gets me that i get a winding noise from the engine only when the gauge goes below cold mark , if yall have any knowledge on this i would gladly appreciate the info and feed back , thanks chad
2006 ford f350 6.0 , 4x4 with around 120,000 miles, egr delete and head studs replaced with heavy duty head gaskets,
I don't have an answer for you about the problem, being a non-mechanic who has learned the hard way about some common 6.0L failures, but here is a source of basic information about the truck and engine that is good to have on hand, called "the 6.0L Bible" (I don't recall which site or forum I found this on, but it is some very helpful info, supposedly written by a Ford Tech):
Welcome to FTE
I would think u need a new Thermostat (only use a OEM version) as far as the winding noise, could it be the Fan (i hear EGR Delete screws w/normal operation of the Fan).
Well see what others have to say.
thanks for the info , i think im going to try a coolant temperature sensor., dont know to much about diesel. but if its like my gas trucks going to start cheap , lol , and the winding noise im getting my buddy to ride under the hood while i drive around in a field to hear where it is coming from , this should be fun, thanks again, i will let yall know if that fixes the temp problem ,
Some very important things to watch in a Diesel:
1. engine oil temp = very close to coolant
2. coolant temp = 192
(above 2 temps should be no more than 15 deg. apart)
3. FICM Volts = 47-48.5
4. EGT (exhaust gas temp) needs to monitored
especially while Towing or if Powered-Up
Plus many more, you can buy a Dash Mounted Programmer/Monitor or the ScanGauge2 is popular here for people who dont want a Programmer & there cheap......Read, Read, Read this Forum & enjoy the new Power
*Motorcraft Oil/Fuel Filters are a MUST, be careful in your "field venture"
Sounds like your low on coolant. The sender will do some very strange things
when it not wet. The other possibility is wire chafing or oil soaking.
Check the coolant level and use approved coolant. The green stuff will mess the engine up.
Silicate free that specs is the way to go. The guys at the 6.0L forum will tell you more.
