Here is my dilemma. I recently noticed my truck making a noise while accelerating. It is the same noise when pulling a hill and the fan clutch kicks in. Well today I was leaving a stop sign and I noticed the sound came back, I looked at the temp gauge and it was slowly climbing towards the red. I began driving and within about 15 seconds the temp was fine and the noise went away. I have plenty of coolant, no leaks and this is intermittent. Has anyone had this problem and could it possibly be thermostat or maybe a sending unit giving a false reading? The truck is at operating temp so the thermostat does not shut does it? I have an 04 350 with 6.0 thanks
Update. I noticed the smell of antifreeze when I lifted the hood after driving. I do not see any leaking anywhere, is it possible I smell it because the truck is hotter than normal?
Do you still have warranty left on it? Check on and around your degauss bottle (coolant overflow bottle) for white spots.
Actually it is under warranty and the truck was dropped off this morning. The service guy said it could be the EGR cooler or a few other things. I will post the outcome when I find out.

The EGR system has been known to ruin the 6.0's, I took care of mine before my motor is ruined. I get my Truck emission tested, the EGR does not reduce pollution, it increases emissions and pollution! Do what I have done, your Truck and your wallet will thank you later.

What exactly did you do and have others done the same? Also is this something that should be done while it is under warranty?
Mine is still under warranty, I did the sneaky up-pipe with the blocker plate. This is not a dealer option, they can not do it for you. There are a lot of threads on this up-grade installation, I feel it is a must if you are planning on keeping your Truck for a long time.

That sounds familiar! I just went through that in November. Turned out to be the Oil cooler failed.... and my 6.0 has had a coolant filter installed for the majority of miles.
I noticed the engine fan coming on more often a few months prior to the issue. I thought it was the summer heat. I also noticed that the coolant level was gradually dropping. Then while towing on a cool night in November it ran up into the red zone and the engine overheat warning 'beep' sounded at the top of 2 grades.
Ford Service bench tested the EGR and oil cooler and said both tested OK. The Tech wanted to replace both, but the Ford Hotline said to test them again. The oil cooler failed the second test so the Ford Hotline only authorized replacement of the oil cooler. The HG's tested fine. They had my truck 7 days.
I really wish they would have replaced the EGR cooler while they had it apart though. No blood to squeeze from the Ford turnip I guess....
Good luck with yours and let us know what they find and replace.

Well the dealership called and advised they checked everything and the EGR cooler was bad. I will have it back on Monday. i hope this fixes it. When I get it back, if I do the block, how will I know if the EGR cooler is leaking again or will this prevent it?
I looked at what they had to offer and for my truck it was the block off plate for $35.00 .I'm just wandering does that plate just slide in between the up pipe and cooler or does it need to be welded in????

Yes, your Truck does not have the up-scoop and all you need is the block off plate. just slide it between the EGR cooler and the up-pipe. No welding required. Once you have installed it you will not have any more EGR problems.
