Engine noise
Before I took my truck in to my mechanic or the dealer, thought I'd check to see if anyone has had this problem; I've got an '09 350 6.3 diesel.
With my '01 250 7.3 if it was summer time (Texas summer) or maybe if I was pulling a load and the motor was 'hot', the motor would run loud for a short time - sort of sounded like it was in a protected mode, maybe a whine....it would then return to normal after a min or less.
My 350 does this - but with 2 problems....one, we were moving down the hiway, it was 100', pulling a load (tractor, etc) and it suddenly switched to that loud mode - and this time all my gauges freaked....flashed, dials zeroed out and then went back to normal. Engine coolant temp was normal.
And after being out of town for a week and not driving it, I cranked it up and pulled out - engine not even warm - and it was in that loud, whiney mode for the first 2 gears, maybe 30-45 secs, then back to normal.
Question is - is there a name for this 'mode'? If you've never heard or experienced it, I'm sure I sound crazy!! Sure appreciate any insights, thanks

Welcome to FTE. First off, you've got a 6.4 if you're running a diesel in the 09 model. The loud noise from the 7.3 you're describing sounds like the fan locking up to help keep things cool. For your 6.4, you'll first need to determine if you're experiencing a regen event.
