I have an 02 7.3 that seems to have a very slight miss. Its more notice able with the cruise on. It has a 197,000 on the clock and I belive the #5 and 8 injector were replaced before I bought it a few years ago. Any ideas on what this could be? Has been doing since I had it. I am getting ready for a 4000 mile trip to CA and back so would like to get this fixed. I tend to worry about little things like that the whole time I am driving. Makes the drive no fun. Other then that it runs good and strong. Starts up fine in cold weather.
I had this issue a few weeks ago. Ended up needing a fuel filter replacement. Been running great ever since. I go through about 4 a year... Not sure if that's good or bad.
I run Rotella T6 and change the oil every 5k, The fuel filter has a around 15k on it so might not be a bad idea to change it. I run Fords Centain booster in every fill up and also put a bottle of prolong in the oil at every oil change. Guess I need to find someone with AE in Columbia MO. Anything I should be testing or looking for with the AE software?
...and also put a bottle of prolong in the oil at every oil change.
AAAK! The injectors are powered by oil. The label says it has a viscosity modifier (assuming you got the stuff for diesel) and some of their products make the oil tacky for "better" adhesion to metal surfaces... uber-bad for injector poppets. When things go wrong on these rigs, step one is to configure as close to original as practical - remove chips/performance adders, and make sure it has plenty of clean fuel, oil, and air.
The 7.3L loves low-viscosity oil (5 weight) when it's cold... and hates oil thicker than 40 weight (viscosity modifier). Well... this is what I'm slowly learning, anyway.
Tugly...Looked through your links for Injector Troubleshooting and 7.3 link. Really good info. I think in the next few days will replace the fuel filter and see were that goes. I looked at the last mileage when I changed it and it has been about 20k or so.
So are saying that the Prolong is not doing me any good? I might have to do a search and see if there is any info on oil additives in here. I am still new to diesels but have learned a lot from this site. My only diesel experience is working on the -86 generators in the Air Force. Old Detroit diesels and that was 10 years ago.
The info in your links says that at around 200K the factory injectors start to wear, so I might look into getting them checked.
