i've got a dumb question is it possible to put a 427 into a 96 ranger? the 427 is mid to late 70s . also have 351m-400 or a 302(5.0) to dump in her if the 427 wont fit. if it dose ware can i get mounting brackets and or instructions. thanks for any help
I don't think the FE 427s were available in the late 70's. Maybe as a service replacement block.
In any case. I'm sure it can be made to fit, but the FE block and matching tranny combinations are big and would certainly be a challenge.
There are 427 stroker versions of the 351 that would fit better and match better with later model transmissions.
That being said, if you have a real 427 FE motor. Put it in something appropriate like a Cobra or Mustang, or maybe even a 67-72 F series Pickup :-)
A real 427 FE motor is worth big money. Take a look on Ebay. Blocks alone can go for $2000-$5000+. Complete Motors are usually $5000 or better, and rebuilt 427s can go for $10,000.
i dont know the exact year it was built but its my uncle's. he said it came out of a wrecked shelby cobra so its older than 70.but if i find a use for it i could have it. he also has a 260, 289ho,and a 4 diffrent 302s. wich one would be the easest to drop in and to find parts for. i just bought this truck and its sortta slow(tops 100Mph)
You be better off putting the 289 or one of the 302s in there..BUT grab that 427!!..You could get a lot of money for it..Or sell the ranger, get a fullsize pickup set up for a FE and put that 427 in it..You will no longer have that "sortta slow" problem..JMO..
hey as soon as i get it home and clean i will post the numbers.
but i dont think im stuffing that thing in my ranger. im only 17 dont need to kill my self. any way the 289 or 302 will work ok.
my big thing is the 427 will twist the frame. but im still droping it in something.
It'd definately have to be a custom job, but I think it's doable. Just make sure you do some serious frame strengthening while you're in there, as well as some stiffer front springs. Might even think about stronger spring mounts. If you move EVERYTHING, you might just get it to fit between the wheel wells. You're on your own for exhaust. That would be sooooo cool. Those are little trucks, and that thing would fly. Plus, the computerized speed control would be gone. You'd probably want to retain the computer to run brake lights, and that kind of stuff. Get a good built C6 to go behind it. But the important thing: ****** up that 427!!!
Just take your time to do it right, and you can do pretty much anything, even put a 427 into a ranger.
We put a 429 Thunder Jet in an 87 Ranger by SIMPLY taking the body off of a 1979 Bronco, extending the frame a bit, and installing the Ranger body. It's an AWESOME truck. We affectionately call it Blackie.
Originally posted by gtex 100 MPH is faster than you need to go in a truck anyway. It's just plain dangerous.
It is? my F350 crew cab dually is pretty stable up to 125-130mph. It had more left, but I had this nagging thought in my head about truck tires @60psi doing that kinda speed...
Gotta love trucks without computers to tell em when to slow down
All I can say, GTEX, is that when you get your new motor installed you better put a throttle stop or something on it or else you are going to find yourself going 100+ MPH pretty darn easily.

exactly, I have enough power now to go over 100 mph. It's just the 4.10 gears. In this case it's about max RPM, not so much power.
With my new motor, the longer stroke, red-line is actually lower. I'll just have enough torque to get a lot of weight up to speed and quickly.
Regardless how smooth you think a truck is at 120 MPH (I'd have to question the accuracy of your speedo), it does not have the aerodynamics, suspension, brakes or tires for that speed. What tranny do you have in that F350? Without OD, you'd have to be spinning pretty fast to get to 120. I topped out my 68 with 3.55 gears at around 105 MPH.
A 1 Ton, is awful heavy and hard to stop from that speed.
Now, don't think I'm a speedaphobe. I've got a vehicle more appropriate for that kind of speed and I've actually seen 155 MPH.
hey thanks for the info and i think im going with the 302. its better on gas and becides street racing and an every day driver i got to be able to pull a 30ft camper behind it, im getting the frame hitch and stiffer shocks and springs. im still gettying the 427. but i dont have any thing to put it in.

You probably have no business putting a 30 ft camper behind a ranger, regardless of the motor. I figure a 30 ft camper is worth about 6000-9000lbs or better. This is 3/4 or 1 ton truck material.
check with the towing forum for more info on towing with that vehicle.
As for the 427, get confirmation that it is indeed a 427 FE, then offer it for sale here :-)
Must have a death wish to wanta pull a 30 ft camper behind a Ranger. Unless you're talking about the earlier full size Ranger, even then that's pushing it to pull a 30 footer behind a 1/2 ton pickup.
