If not for the dependablity, I gotta go with the FE cammer, but the timing chain was something like 6 feet long, and they didnt make many. But I grew up working on 429's with my dad and uncle, both of which work on them all the time now. Some of the idiots they have running the machines would amaze you. They put them through all kinda stuff, and the always amaze me. Any time I see one of their service trucks, I always go look in the back to see what those guys have broken that day. I guess that "Do not engage clutch at more than 1500 RPMs" means rev heck out of her and dump it.

My dad never had any problems with his, other than what is to be expected from 30 year old technology(points failing, clogged fuel filters) and all 3 my uncle has built have lasted 200k+ ,miles, one in a jacked up 76, one in a 73 custom, and one in a 66 stang.

Brain is right too, those 502's dont play!
I dont know enough about the mopars to make a judgement, but i have never driven a dodge V8 that didnt have any power.
I gotta start making my posts shorter, sorry fellas.

I figure, I can leave out the chevy 502, as it was never in a production vehicle.

But: My favorite Big block is definately the 440 six pack mopar engine.
The LS6 454 would be my next choice.
The cadillac 502 of the Mid 70's was a torque beast too.
I kind of leave out the 420- some odd inch engines since all of the big three offered bigger.
The 460 ford was never put in an application where it could shine so that is why I didn't list it.

I like the 460 myself.

I went for a ride in a 440 Charger, and wasn't overly impressed.

BB Chevies are alot like my old Tempo. A lot of noise with nothing to show for it.

What would you consider an application where it could shine, which apparently isn't any Ford trucks or large Ford cars from the 70's?

what? no mention of the legendary 426 hemi I know they would get beat by the 440 with a six pack from the factory but open up its exhaust and watch out.

Wheres is chevys new 8.1 liter? (I'd never want one but I also believe it should be mentioned)

Are you talking about orignal motors that were actually put in production vehicles or are you counting crate motors that you can buy from the orginal manufactors like the 502 chevy the 518 ford or how about the 572 from chevy?

In my personal opinon I would take the 429 boss motor over all that but I love fords period.
