Yah he was just saying on the mechanic forum or program he uses he's read a few people having to replace the motor because of the noise not the lifter. He said if its the lifter he can fix it and just saying it can be worse. Sorry for the confusion. Thanks for all your help Berry. Ill update as he calls
Yeah, he is referring to the cam phaser noise that is prevalant on these motors. Many times that noise happens when the oil pressure drops below 20psi hot and basically means the motor is toast.
What you have here is different. Your mech is smart in doing the oil pressure test. That is key. I am not sure what it would cost to be honest. The lifters themselves are like $15 each, but a new head is prob. $300-600 plus labor. Again, I am just guessing.
Not saying you would, it's more of a worse case scenario. I had a collapsed lifter than damaged my head. The dealer replaced it and all was well. I am not well versed in the mod motor heads/lifters, but my motor had a ticking just like you have. Luckily I was in warranty.
I've been using Mobil 10w30. Pretty sure it's a motorcraft oil filter. The mechanic changed my oil in it when he did my plugs and coils. I think he said he uses castrol in the 10w-30. Not sure on his filter. He also tried to replace it with the 5w-20 today like the truck recommends. And their was no change. He mentioned draining a quart and putting Lucas oil treatment in it and see how it worked.
Which oil do you use? Should I stay with the 5w-20 after everything is resolved?
I use 5w30 mobil 1 and Motorcraft filter. I would run 5w30 or 5w20 full synth on your next oil change. Don't add any additives, it won't cure the lifter. These engines are speced to run 5w30 in europe, so don't let the 'experts' steer you into only using 5w20.

Curiously, why are you advising to not use what the manufacturer recommends?

I never said don't use 5w20. I won't clog up this thread with oil debates. I suggest you go to bob the oil guy website and search 5.4; 5w30. There are lengthy discussions on this.

Not trying to start a debate I was just asking, seemed like you were recommending 5w30 over 5w20 and I was curious if something had happened in the past. I always use what the manufacturer suggests.
Update- mechanic said its def the lifter and sounds like two of them (both passenger) and was thinking of changing all 4 on that side. Would their be any reason to mess with the driver side. He said no need to but just asking? But he said if we were changing the two bad ones might as well change the all 4 on the passenger side. So I'm waiting for a call back on a price and see what else he says.
