It's not real loud but I can hear it from the driver seat with the hood closed. Sounds like a small diesel motor. Sound is def. coming from passenger side towards the front of the motor. That's why I was thinking the timing chain guide. I'm not sure a sound clip will get it clearly and then I don't know how to post it. If it were the injectors will the injector cleaner help or stop the noise?
And could the work I just had done (all new coils/spark plugs) cause any of these problems. If so, can you explain how? Im not good with motors and try to do as much research as poss. to before bringing to the mechanic. Id like to know what to expect and try to make it seem like I know what Im talking about so I dont get screwed to bad.
Thanks Berry
Im also reading alot of people putting 15w40 and getting rid of the ticking noise. Anyone here tried that with any luck? Im driving to Disney World in 15 days in this expedition and would like to have it running like it should before then and not worry in back of my mind if ill make it their without any problems.
I brought it to my mechanic and he said the same thing that it could be the chain guides bc he's seen a few 5.4's with broken guides. I plan on bringing it in Tom. So I guess ill keep you updated as to what he finds, hopefully it's just the guides bc I already bought the new kit lol
He actually just called 5 mins ago and said he tested the oil pressure and it was running 50-60 but I think it's suppose to be 70ish? But he also said it sounds like the lifter bc it's from the middle of the motor and still troubleshooting it before tearing into it. He said he's reading that some mechanics have had to replace the motor because of the sound, which I hope we don't have to do bc the truck is in great shape and I'm not sure what a motor cost.
The oil pressure is fine if that's a warm reading. When it starts getting below 20psi warm then you have issues. You don't need to replace the motor for a bad lifter. I had a collapsed lifter on my 2008 with 7K miles. They replaced the head and it fixed it.
So what's all involved in a bad lifter or to change it? What kind of price is that looking at. I know it depends on the mechanic but just a round about.
Yah he was just saying on the mechanic forum or program he uses he's read a few people having to replace the motor because of the noise not the lifter. He said if its the lifter he can fix it and just saying it can be worse. Sorry for the confusion. Thanks for all your help Berry. Ill update as he calls
