Hello everyone, my truck has 68k miles and I have just had a coolant flush about 3000 miles ago, in the last few weeks I've been doing alot of reading here and looking at the coolant the auto shop put in my truck. This is the coolant they put in it, I'm wondering if you guys think it is alright stuff, if its not I will put CAT EL-1 coolant in it. I also will be purchasing a coolant filter system very soon as well I just haven't decided on which brand to purchase. I use the torque app on my phone to monitor eot/ect and I'm showing anywhere from 2-6 degree spread.
Thanks, Mike
Heres the link to the coolant the auto body shop put in my truck. I have wish I would have done some reading before I had this flush done and had them put in some CAT EL-1 coolant.....
In the tech folders Bizmic has the brake down for coolent If you dont see it in there I would P.m him and ask .sorry I couldent be much help , most use what you had mentioned or ford prem gold Its all about the coolers health and not plugging that bad boy up.
nah i won't be using Ford gold, i was just wondering if the coolant the repair shop put in was ok. Ill check in the tech folders
thanks, mike
Why do you dismiss the use of the Ford Premium Gold coolant so quickly?
Why did you allow the repair shop/mechanic to use a coolant that you have no idea is compatitable or not with your motor?
The Ford specifcation for Ford Prem. Gold coolant is: Ford specification WSS-M97B51-A1 or ASTM D 3306-00A (Motorcraft® Gold Antifreeze/Coolant).
It would appear that if the coolant you and your shop used, and the link you provided above, does NOT readily state that it is made to meet the "Ford specification" or the "ASTM specification"... which means, you are getting less than optimum protection!!!
Again... why do you dismiss the use of Ford's coolant yet waste you time and money on a repair shop that used/uses products that do meet the requirements of what is called for in your high dollar 6.0L PSD motor?
Personally, I have used the Ford coolant with perfect results and flush with distilled water every 50,000 miles. I also installed a dieselsite.com coolant filter at 50,000 miles and have never looked back when it comes to the health of my cooling system in my truck.
Fresh, clean coolant is vital and the Ford Prem Gold is just fine as long as one flushes their system, uses distileld water (as it came from the factory). I now have 240,000 miles with no EGR, EGR cooler or oil cooler related issues (for what it is worth).
I'm not a fan of Ford gold, as by reading other forums and these included that the silicate in Ford gold gums up and causes problems with the oil cooler, so I was convinced that gold was no good, thats why I did not think about gold, looks like I will be doing a flush myself. The reason I let the shop do it awhile ago is because a couple months ago after I got this done I then started reading these forums and other powerstroke forums and kind of wised up about our 6.0 trucks.
I was under the impression that doing a flush with distilled water, and using vc-9 then filling with distilled water and a CAT EL-1 rated coolant was the best thing to do. I will be installing a coolant filter when I do a flush too.
I'm not arguing the coolant that is in my truck right now is inferior, just trying to decide what to put in it now.
I do not know what was put in yours but make sure it is the right stuff. My oil cooler started to plug up after around 50,000 miles, just after I did a coolant change. I was using Gold Ford coolant since new and never added anything else in it.
I lost count on how many flushes I did to get rid of the flakes left by the Gold coolant in the oil cooler, I got rid of it finaly but there was also much of that sh... in the big coolant radiator, flushing and back flushing in a close loop could not get rid of it all so I replaced the big coolant rad with a bullet proof one and installed a filter.
I now have Red Cat EC1 for the pass 20,000 miles or so.
I am no engineer and cannot tell you the chemistry or mystery behind Ford Gold, but I am sure of one thing, the Gold flake came from the Gold Coolant.

DID the gold flake come from the ford gold, or did the ford gold merely add color to the casting sand left behind in the motor?
I have over 180000 miles with ford gold and no issues with my cooling system, oil cooler or egr system

It could have been casting sand. Some of the stuff looks like small whitish grain and some was small flakes, very thin, yellowish and all over in the cooling system. As I was flushing the Coolant Radiator in a big container, it was allways comming back, flush after flush, looks like it was stuck in the radiator passage.
When I did the flush, I flushed and backflushed everything in a close loop, I think it is the best way to make sure stuff does not contaminate from one component to another. I think one of the crucial thing on this engine is having clean coolant. Once you did a proper troughout cleaning, you should have removed all the scale, crap, sand, white yellowish flakes and rust flakes. Then, a filter is a must to make sure nothing flows in the engine any more.
I use some couplings to connect to the garden hose and flow water from one end to the other and vice versa. I put the out line in a big container to monitor what comes out. Circulate until I see nothing in the bottom of the container.
In to out, out to in by themself: heater radiator, coolant rad, oil cooler, EGR cooler. For the engine block, I removed the drain plug from the driver side and the block heater from the passenger side, above the starter. I also removed the Thermostat to make sure everything circulate freely.
Then you can flush with distilled water to remove the home water and fill up with proper coolant.
