Coolant

Not to beat a dead horse but what should I do.I have 140,000 on original coolant.I asked this question a while back and everyone suggested a flush and fill w/ long life coolant. The only long life I have seen here is Prestone and maybe Peak. Is this the right stuff and do I need to add the coolant filter.I want whats best for the truck whatever it is as long as it works.

I copied this from a 2003 diesel owners supplement guide which you should have..

The cooling system in your vehicle is filled with either green-colored
Motorcraft Premium Engine Coolant meeting Ford specification
ESE-M97B44–A or yellow-colored Motorcraft Premium Gold Engine
Coolant meeting Ford Specification WSS-M97B51–A1. To determine your
vehicle’s coolant type (color), check your coolant reservoir.
• Add Motorcraft Premium Engine Coolant (green-colored),
VC-4–A (U.S.) or CXC-10 (Canada) or Motorcraft Premium
Gold Engine Coolant (yellow-colored), VC-7–A, depending on
the type of coolant originally equipped in your vehicle. If you
are unsure which type of coolant your vehicle requires, check your
coolant reservoir or contact your local dealer.

• Do not add/mix an orange-colored, extended life coolant such
as Motorcraft Speciality Orange Engine Coolant, VC-2 (US) or
CXC-209 (Canada), meeting Ford specification WSS-M97B44–D
with the factory-filled coolant. Mixing Motorcraft Speciality Orange
Engine Coolant or any orange-colored extended life product with your
factory filled coolant can result in degraded corrosion protection.

If you don't your owner's guides... see Ford's Webpage:

http://genuineservice.com/genuineser...loveboxresults

Look at the back of the coolant jugs, and it might state the spec's and look for the Ford spec's listed above....

I used a coolant from Pepboys called "Final Charge global" and it's already diluted. Just pour it in right out of the container. It's good for 300,000 miles. I don't know that I would run my anti freeze this long, but agian it is a good one. Hope this helps yah out.

The BEST? Chevron Delo ELC.

The latest formulation of the Delo ELC has a maintenance-free change interval of 750K miles/8 years or 1M miles with an extender.

Here is a list of ELC's that would work:
  • CAT HD ELC
  • Fleetrite HD ELC (International's brand)
  • Rotella HD ELC
  • Prestone HD ELC
  • Zerex Extreme HD ELC
  • Chevron/Texaco/Delo ELC

I agree with Stewart. If I could find someone around here that could order Chevron, it would be in my truck right now. I settled for Rotella, only because I couldnt find anyone who had the final charge(cheaper, but basically same as Rotella) in the concentrated formula. Flush the system out completely and get rid of that green stuff. Put the red in and be happy. I do not run any kind of filter on my truck.

Once you do a good flush, make sure you get all the grit & green stuff out. Use distilled water (get about 20 gallons) and keep filling, running, & draining until it comes out of the radiator clear (don't forget to run the heater and let it warm up to . Once it does, drain one last time, fill with 4 gallons of concentrated coolant, and top off with distilled water. Keep a gallon with you so you can top it off in case you get some air pockets in there to work out.

I would look at the manufacturer specs that the coolant meets. Avoid prestone as it is crap. Peak is good but make sure it has the diesel specs on it. Around here I use fleetgaurd which is put out by Cummins power. It is availiable at some of the local Farm equipment stores, our local NAPA dealer carries it and my fuel/lubricants supplier carries it along with the additive required. Zerox is also a good coolant to look at. Make sure it meets the engine manufacurer specs on the label.

Zerex makes two that work in our truck -- G-05 (gold stuff) and ELC Heavy Duty Diesel (I think it's red). Either of those will work, but if you're going through the trouble of changing it out, might as well go full ELC (Zerex ELC, Rotella ELC, Final Charge, Delo ELC, etc...).

i agree with izzy... if your going to change it use zerex... especially if you have the yellow (gold) in it... if its red use it, if its green use it... the color codes are there for a reason because of their chemical make up and what they do for your engines...

You can either put gold back in, or find one of the ELCs. Check for Final Charge too. I found that Napa has it reasonably priced.

Check with your local Cat dealer... that's where I got the Cat ELC Concentrate, which is the Rotella ELC sold with the Cat name on it. I confirmed this with both Rotella and Cat before buying.
