I bought my SD because I wanted a big, heavy, safe, badass truck, and the straight axles that are under these trucks are pretty much bulletproof. My girlfriend has a 1/2 ton Ram and that thing is basically a big car. You can't hear the engine, it rides like a sponge, the steering sucks, and it sits so freaking low to the ground. My truck is lifted now, but even when it was stock height I still had to step up to get into it... I like that. And yeah, gas mileage ain't gonna be so good in these monsters... especially with a gas motor.
My reasons for wanting one are like yours. I want a big truck. I've driven my uncles 2011 f-150 platinum a few times. It rides a lot more like a car than my tundra does. It has the eco boost, which has loads of power but there just isn't that throaty deep v8 sound when you hit it and to me that's a big part of having a truck. It's big and strong, and makes a little bit of noise when you hit. I'm all for a nice interior and everything but at the end of the day a truck should still have somewhat of an unrefined feeling to it. Like a linebacker in a tux. I wasn't expecting good mpg from a super duty. I was thinking 13-14 mpg before I started reading some of the mpg threads. I was a little shocked to see guys posting about getting 10 unloaded driving around.

I average 13mpg in mine, which isn't too bad in my eyes. My 4 cylinder Ranger only gets 18-20mpg.

what type of engine are you looking for? A v10 will guarantee you 10 mpg driving around

I was getting 13-14 when the truck was stock... then I found this place, and a few modifications later.... lift, tires, blah blah... I'm getting 9-10 I agree, I love the V8 sound. I love they way my 5.4 sounds right now with my flowmaster muffler... nice rumble at idle and it growls when I take off. "linebacker in a tux"... I like it

I like the concept of the eco-boost, but I want the sound of a V8. I think maintenance cost on the eco-boost could be potentially terrifying. It is a twin turbo motor... what happens when it shreds an impeller bearing... $$$$$$$$$$$

My dad has a '11 F150 ecoboost... He brought it brand new and it has about 60k on it.... no issues. It is so quiet, you can barely hear the engine idling. But it tows like a train... that thing is strong.

If you get 14-15 in your Toyota, the 6.2 wont be a whole lot different. I get about that.

I have no doubt, its just a fear in my mind. I like manual everything though for simplicity...

Because I can

I was looking to replace my 78 Chevy. Wife said I could get what I wanted, it just needed to last me for 10 to 15 years. We have always wanted a camper and a boat, so I figured lets buy a truck that can haul now. That and once you've heard the turbo wind up and throw you back in the seat, you just gotta get it!

I'm looking at a 2013 with a 6.2 4x4 with 3.73 gears. If I could get 14 that would be great, I'm just scared of getting one and then only getting 10. I understand these aren't exactly priuses. It would be nice if they still offered something similar to the 5.4 that they have in years past. I could do what my buddy suggested and get a diesel for the better gas mileage... not. He bought a ram 2500 with the cummins I don't think i've ever seen him tow anything. no sense dropping an extra 8k plus maintenance and fuel cost for something I won't use

That is the exact truck I have but mine is a 2012. I wanted the taller gears because the 6.2 is a little weak down low but the 3.73s are fine. It definitely gets better mileage than my V10 did. I would expect 13-14 (thats city miles for me - better on the freeway). Unless you hammer on it of course.

For the premium you pay for the Diesel motor, you could buy a heck of a lot of gas. I would argue that the 5.4 in a super duty gets about the same, if not worse, than the 6.2. I had the 3V 5.4 in my 05 f150 and it got pretty poor MPG.

It depends if you even need a truck? A 4 cylinder ranger would be a nice fuel efficient truck. dont buy a 3/4 ton truck for it's fuel saving properties

Why not get a used one and then throw a few grand into a beater car. You then get big truck when you need it and fuel economy when you need it. New vehicles are really nice, but I could never justify the price. You can find some really nice used Super Dutys

I wanted the diesel for the sound and fuel economy, but I could justify maintenance cost. I do haul stuff, but not very often and I do not own a trailer.
