Whatever the problem is the ignition switch powers up everything , but it wont do anything in the start position. No spring action or cranky. The cylinder just rolls into that position with no resistance at all.
It might actually be the switch then. As you probably know, the switch itself sits on top of the column about a foot or so back from the firewall. I'm not sure if you can get to it w/o dropping the column, but that isn't all that difficult - I just did it. Pull the collar on the column and the trim piece and pull the bolts going into the dash.
I hope that piece on mine never breaks, although I did have an ignition switch grenade on me, I could barely get the key in sometimes and when I would start it would be one hell of a fight to get it back off the starter engage position. Replaced it with a $10 ignition lock and that was the end of that, new one's been working perfectly for months now.
If turning the key makes something happen with the switch then the part isn't broken, or at least not completely broken. And, being pot metal one would think that there isn't any "partly broken", that it would be fine or broken, nothing in between.
But, I don't know where the spring is that brings things out of Start and into Run. IOW, whether there's a spring in the mechanism or the switch, or both. It sounds like there may be one in the switch itself and the switch is broken. Let's see what others say.

I have a friend who is a FORD technician. He is about 6' 7" tall and BIG. I was amazed to see him crawl between the bench seat and steering wheel and change the switch on a F150 in less than 10 minutes [by my watch]!

I'll bet he's done it before. Several times. If you know how to get the connector out it might not be a big deal, but that connector can be a bear.
