OK , Jason has some questions about the Bronco and I don't know the answers. He was wanting to know what the total advance is on the timing. Also he is wondering if the dizzy has too light of springs in it because he doesn't think it should be pinging at 6°BTDC. I told him I have no idea if we even looked at the total advance.
Gary, do you remember if we checked total advance?
No, we didn't check the advance at all. But, the springs aren't so light that the advance is coming in at idle or even a bit above. It is rock steady at 6˚ at idle and with the lope it has if the springs were letting the advance come in the timing would not be steady. It looks like the engine isn't even turning it is so steady.
Well then I can check that out whenever the carb job comes back around. For the time being I am sick of working on this thing. I need to do some stuff to the F250 to get it back to legal to drive. I am trashing my good truck out because the F250 is too shady to drive with its one headlight and no tail lights.

Stock spec's mean nothing with a cam, aftermarket heads, exhaust, etc....
The question comes, what conditions is it pinging under, RPM load etc. To really set a distributor up you need a distributor test machine, one that will work with a DS-II system. If you are only running mechanical advance (no vacuum) then most Ford small blocks like 36-38° total advance. Where it comes in may be the problem. The GT-350 I used to own had an interesting curve, it was mostly in at 3000 rpm, but continued to advance until 5000 rpm.
Ok , so tonight Jason and I went to look at the timing again. I tried to start it and it wasn't cooperating. I was cranking it over and I guess the ignition switch took a crap on me. The lock cylinder is just flopping around and not starting the truck. It seems as though the actuator rod isn't attached or something. So another hurdle to jump trying to get it going again.
Do you have a tilt wheel? The tilt steering wheels, at least in the 80 - 86 era, are notorious for having a piece break in the linkage. I've heard that the HELP section in the parts stores has the part, but I don't know that for sure.
