I was driving home last night and was pushing the truck a little, I pressed the pedal to make the tranny downshift, but suddendly I felt and hear a loud hit/shake, suddendly the truck felt like it was in Neutral, or slipping badly with very little power. I was almost home, so I left the truck on the street. Today I turned the truck on and was unable to make it go in any gear, until I placed it in R, it was like putting it in D (yet the truck felt weird and weak), I drove it like that for less than 1/2 a mile to store it home, during the drive the tranny shifted up once and it was almost the same as yesterday. There was a penetrating burned plastic smell (not the same as overheated ATF smell), and I had to push the truck to back it up in place... Any ideas? my hope and suspect is the TC, but the weird behaviour of the gears make me suspect it is way worse.
The converter is a torque multiplier. I'm not sure of your issue but it sounds like something broke. First have you checked your fluid? I wonder about a broke band. Hopefully someone will chime in with some experience with the E4OD.

The burnt smell was from the ATF, so that might mean something got stuck inside the transmission or the TC. Before anything I'll take the pan down and check if there is any visible damage there, then adjust the MLPS and pour new ATF if I deem it worthy of a try. Since the damage occurred when the transmission was downshifting could I suspect of the valve body or solenoid pack? or maybe it's a hard part? what do you guys think?.
What does that sensor do? In the old days it was a neutral safety switch. What has been added to the switch. Ford has used a switch like that clear back into the 70s I can't remember if the FMX of the late 60s used them.
If that switch burned you wouldn't be able to start the truck if it still has the original function.

The Manual Lever Position Sensor (MLPS) has several functions. As the name implies it proves the position signal to the PCM (computer). This is a vital piece of information when the vehicle uses an electronic controlled transmission such as the E4OD, 4R70W,4R100, etc. This sensor is also referred to as the Transmission Range (TR) sensor in some manuals.
There is also a neutral safety switch starter function, 4wd lo-range activation and backup lamp circuit operation.
