It's an "intake air temperature sensor". It's normally inserted around the air filter assembly. I'd guess your truck has an aftermarket air filter installed. Some people will re-install it with the aftermarket filter. I wouldn't worry too much about it. But if you can, keep it close to the filter...

What grec-o-face said on the intake air temp sensor.
The a/c could be unpluged because of a bad compessor if it comes on and locks up
the belt could burn off and cause other problems.

Is the engine operational? Looks like the CPS is just sitting there, not plugged in. Hmmm

In the pic posted, are you referring to the plug out of focus behind the IAT? If so that is likely the connector for the EBPS.

Ah, very good. I am mistaken. Thought the wiring couldn't reach that far up but it sure looks like a CPS.

Guys, thats the outside air temp sensor, mounted on the drivers side of the radiator, that shows temp in the overhead display. Inlet air temp sensor in the air filter is a clear plastic thingy with the yellow indicator inside.

Pretty sure it's the air filter temp, like has been mentioned. Your describing the filter minder, nothing to do with temp., just restriction.

Trekbasso, you're correct, my bad. I WAS thinking of the filter minder.

But the pictured item IS mounted as I described and not "inserted around the air filter assembly"

And I'm pretty sure it is what drives the temp display on the overhead.
