Has anyone pulled the Y pipe down on a 2006 4.6 3 valve? I recently pulled my wifes motor out and replaced it. I could not figure out how to get the Y pipe out so I had to leave the trans up under the car on jack stands because the Y pipe was in the way. I have a plugged cat now and want to buy a whole new Y pipe. I dont have a problem cutting the old one out with my sawzall but I want to be able to reinstall the new one without my sawzall. Has anyone done this?
Yeah, you unbolt it. Just a matter of the right sized sockets and extensions and/or the use of wobblies. If the studs and nuts are pretty rusty, they may put up a fight, so use lots of penetrating fluid and use an impact gun.
I cannot for the life of me understand why you would want to do a whole y-pipe on a 4.6L Explorer. Way more trouble than a good weld in universal.
Simply unbolting it will not get it out. I was trying to take it out when i changed my engine. It was in the wayof the trans. I could not get it out. So i left the trans in place just moved back a couple inches.
I have a plugged cat so im just looking to replace the whole y pipe
Exactly, cut the pipe just in front on and behind the plugged cat, weld a new one in, you are done, and at a fraction of the cost of a new one. Why replace all three cats when one is bad? Even if two are bad, you can replace them for a fraction of the cost of a complete assembly. Even three would be cheaper, plus it is actually easier.
Unbolting it is easy. There are two bolt flanges on the front that attach them to the manifolds. The rear is a slightly larger 2 bolt flange. You slide a good socket on, and unbolt them. If you have to ask how to do it, maybe you shouldn't be touching it. Its really obvious, and not very difficult.
Maybe you should research a 2006 before you spout off. Maybe if you read what i wrote you would see i know how to unbolt it. I am asking "how does it come out WITHOUT cutting it in half"? If you cant answer that no need to put your dumb *** comments in
Mine was interesting the first time I had to drop it, yours should go about the same:
The front driveshaft has to come out, and the vehicle has to be in the air a bit to give clearance. You may also have to remove the transmission crossmember, and disconnect the battery since it's pretty tight around the starter.
I've done a 2006. If somethings in the way, take your time and remove whats in the way. Thats the way cars work these days. Removing the driveshaft is not difficult. Despite that, I would not replace the y-pipe on one of these cars when a good high quality weld in is so inexpensive and easy to replace. If your bolt in assembly is somehow cheaper, then something is wrong with it.
